After the ninth season finale of RHOP, a memorial slide featuring Matt’s image appeared on screen, accompanied by the message, “With fond remembrance. Matthew Byars, 1987 – 2024.
Matt, who frequently appeared on various seasons and was primarily known as Karen’s closest friend and trusted assistant, notably during her season three press conference where she tried to clarify rumors surrounding her financial struggles, tragically passed away at 37 years old on November 21st. The following day, Karen publicly expressed her sorrow over the unexpected demise of her long-term confidant.
She shared her thoughts with People magazine on November 22nd, saying that she would forever cherish Matt as the vibrant, kind 17-year-old she had met long ago. His sincere spirit and endless vitality made those around him feel uplifted. Beyond being a beloved figure on RHOP and in the Bravo community, Matt was an ambitious and motivated young man who shared a strong connection with the Huger family.
Karen went on to acknowledge Matt’s “love and support” after her mother’s 2017 death.
61-year-old stated that Matt was incredibly cherished, and his lack will be severely noticed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. To those who were family to Matt, they are offered heartfelt sympathies, affection, and prayers for solace. My own heart is shattered, Matt. I love you both here and in the afterlife. Until we reunite, I will keep your spirit alive within me. You will be dearly missed, my friend.
Karen’s RHOP costars also shared insight into how she was coping with the tragic news.
Mia Thornton shared with TopMob News at Bravo’s Fan Fest in Miami on November 23 that she was with her co-star Wendy Osefo, and they reached out to Karen immediately, expressing their love and support. In a text message, she expressed her affection, “Sister, I love you. If you need anything, I’m here for you.” She added that it’s difficult because we often overlook our strong friends. Matt was a strong friend to Karen, as she observed from the outside. His sudden passing is shocking, but she believes his life will inspire many more and wants to ensure his legacy continues.
Wendy expressed, “I’m simply extending affection to Matt, as well as his family. He was deeply connected to Karen and now, with us all surrounding each other, he becomes an essential part of everyone’s lives. I can only hope that during tough times, people will find those who care for them.
