As a long-time Scrubs enthusiast who’s been waiting for this day like a patient waiting for their MRI results, let me just say, the news about the reboot has me jumping for joy! I mean, who wouldn’t want to see J.D., Elliot, Turk, Dr. Cox, and the whole gang back in action? It’s been over a decade since we bid adieu to Sacred Heart Hospital, and I’ve missed their quirky antics more than I can express!
After years of speculation, it appears that a Scrubs revival is truly on the horizon, as Deadline reported earlier today that creator Bill Lawrence has secured a deal to create the series for ABC and 20th Television. It’s been more than a decade since the initial series concluded abruptly in its ninth season, but now fans can look forward to seeing many of the original cast members reunite for a show that seems to blend elements of both reboot and revival. Although specific details are yet to be disclosed, we do have some insights into how the original program will connect with the upcoming series, so let’s explore what we know thus far.
A Welcome Return
Beyond Lawrence’s negotiations to rejoin the show, it appears that casting is underway with key members from the initial cast being considered. The news suggests that Zach Braff (J.D.), Sarah Chalke (Elliot), Donald Faison (Turk), John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox), and possibly Judy Reyes (Carla) are all being contacted to reprise their roles in the series. There are also early discussions about welcoming Judy Reyes back as well.
Previously, Lawrence shared that the series would offer viewers an insight into the progression of medicine and the growth of our beloved characters within it. It’s also been hinted at the introduction of fresh interns who will interact with JD, Elliot, Turk, and the rest of their team. Interestingly, this aligns with the dynamics of the ninth season as well.
The Original Finale
Originally intended to be the series finale, Scrubs’ season 8 ended with episode 18 titled “My Finale”, which depicted J.D.’s last day at Sacred Heart Hospital. This episode was filled with touching moments such as JD’s farewell hug with Dr. Cox and the revelation of the Janitor’s real name, Glen. However, the show continued for two more seasons, concluding in 2010 during season 9.
On the Goodbye J.D. sign, J.D. envisions a future where he’s married to Elliot, they have another child, and they celebrate holidays with the Turks, Coxes, and the Coxes. It also shows Izzy and Sammy getting engaged. He muses that his dreams might become reality, but this wasn’t the actual ending of Scrubs in the end.
The New Finale
Episode 13 of Season 9, titled “Our Thanks,” was aired rather than serving as the series finale as initially planned. Although Season 9 takes place 18 months after “My Finale,” it wasn’t meant to conclude the show in a traditional manner. This is due to the fact that the full season wasn’t commissioned, and so the episodes come to an end with episode 13. This episode primarily focuses on the newer characters of the season, while Dr. Cox and Dr. Turk appear less frequently compared to previous episodes.
To put it simply, episode 9 of season 9 focuses on J.D. and Elliot’s journey as they ready themselves for the birth of their baby, even taking a pre-birth getaway (or babymoon) at Sacred Heart Hospital. This event marked the conclusion of their storyline in that season. If a reboot occurs set in the present, we can expect to see their child grown up and possibly another new addition to their family. Additionally, we might witness an updated Sacred Heart Hospital, given it was previously rebuilt, and there’s potential for some characters from season 9 to return in the reboot.
