How Tina Knowles and Beyoncé Settle Business Disagreements

Tina, who is connected to Solange Knowles (38 years old) through her ex-husband Matthew Knowles, has mentioned that she’s often been the one to maintain harmony within her family. This trait, she believes, is what she extends into the boardroom as well.

She admitted that occasionally, conflicts arise when interacting with her child or vice versa with her mother. She confessed, ‘I’m usually the one who gives in. This has been my nature since I was a child. If my children are upset with me, I can’t handle it and end up apologizing.’

In her 2025 book titled “Matriarch”, Tina Knowles expresses concern about Solange Knowles becoming a mother at 17 years old. Despite supporting Solange’s choice to have the baby, she advised against rushing into marriage and urged her daughter not to get married immediately. Additionally, she attempted to persuade Daniel Smith, the baby’s father, to encourage Solange to postpone the wedding for a while.

In my recent correspondence with Daniel, he shared an emotional phone call where Solange expressed her displeasure. She exclaimed, “I’m livid with you, and I’m livid at my mother too, and I’m livid with Angie because I believe they orchestrated this.” After letting him have it, she abruptly ended the call and vanished for two full days. This behavior from Solange was alarming, and even though it echoes her past disappearances, I couldn’t help but feel enraged.

As a devoted admirer recounting the tale, I’d say: In the year 2004, I was fortunate to witness the nuptials between Solange and Daniel, with our cherished family members by our side. However, our union did not last long, as we found ourselves parting ways in 2007. Our dear son, Julez Smith, remained a constant source of joy throughout this journey.

As for Angie Beyince, it’s a name I came to share with her due to an interesting family tradition. You see, my aunt Tina and her siblings each had unique spellings of their last name. By chance, when Tina was born, her birth certificate bore the name “Celestine Ann Beyoncé.” This is how we ended up bearing the same surname.

In the novel Matriarch, Tina remembered that she had desired to alter something. One evening, while her brother Larry was doing his homework, she penned down, “I expressed I wanted to rehearse my own name, so he lent me his pencil and recited each letter for me.” When they reached her last name, Larry took a moment to consider it.

She pointed out that each of the children spelled our parent’s last name differently – it was Buyince for some, Boyance for others, while I went with Beyoncé. (This sentence maintains the original meaning but uses a more conversational tone.)

When she insisted that her mother Agneз take action regarding her incorrectly spelled birth certificate, Tina stated, “I was informed, ‘Just be grateful you’re getting a birth certificate.’ Since, at one point in history, Black people weren’t even issued birth certificates.” Additionally, Agnéz commented, “‘Your name is lovely.’

It’s clear that the name stuck with her, as Tina chose to call her firstborn Beyoncé. “The spelling didn’t matter when I received it,” she wrote. “It was our name, our history. The most precious thing I owned, and now I could pass it on. I’ve ensured that the legacy continues.

Before their daughter Blue Ivy Carter was born in 2012, Beyoncé had experienced several miscarriages prior to that with Jay-Z. These unfounded rumors spread by malicious individuals claiming she had fabricated her pregnancy, and that her baby bump wasn’t genuine, truly upset Tina (Beyoncé’s mother).

In a message, Tina expressed her frustration by saying, “That was some incredibly foolish behavior,” adding that she felt compelled to vent and correct those individuals who were misinformed. They seemed oblivious to the struggles endured by Tina, Jay, and their entire family. That incident was one of the most challenging times when Beyoncé forbade her from publicly addressing the matter.

In hindsight, she thinks Beyoncé was right not to dignify any of the bogus stories with a response.

Still, Tina expressed, “Being a mom, the persistent gossip leaves me powerless, incapable of safeguarding my kids. I can tackle other issues that arise, but gossip? It seems beyond my grasp.

In one of her writings, Tina mentioned that her relationship with Mathew Knowles, Beyoncé and Solange’s father, whom she tied the knot with in 1980, was excellent more than half the time. However, their bond, which seemed almost celestial, was often disrupted by his unpredictable actions.

In my account, I’d express it as, “He’d display unfaithful behavior or misconduct, and I’d reach my limit. He’d plead for forgiveness, weeping and vowing to change. Yet, the same issues would resurface, as I penned down. However, I convinced myself that such behavior was common among married couples.

Tina too questioned whether she could manage independently as she hadn’t held a job since becoming a mother, pondering, “What would happen if I walked away from him?

When Tina was pregnant with Solange (born in 1986), her marriage was falling apart at a rapid pace, and she acknowledged this in her writing. Despite the pregnancy, she found it increasingly difficult to salvage the relationship due to Mathew’s infidelity. In the year 2009, Tina decided to end her 29-year long marriage, following the discovery that her husband had started another family apart from their own.

In “Matriarch,” she expressed feeling unusually volatile when Matthew received paternity papers on October 2, 2009, during Beyoncé’s recognition as Billboard’s Woman of the Year. Unlike other times when she had decided to depart, this time she felt compelled to stay, and in the aftermath of that emotional event, she maintained her lifestyle, adhering to her routine and using work as a means to cope and move forward.

However, Matthew persisted in winning her over, and as he pursued me, I discovered that I was falling in love all over again.

Which is how she ended up in a situationship with her own spouse.

Instead of writing “she knew the kids would be so mad at us if they found out we were back together,” Tina could have said, “She felt certain that our daughters Beyoncé and Solange would not approve if they discovered we had reunited.

On Mother’s Day in 2010, when the children unexpectedly arrived at Tina’s house, they quickly figured it out. The eldest, Bey, gave a solemn nod as described by Tina, while Solange expressed herself exuberantly due to her protective feelings.

In her writing, Tina expressed that each family member displayed affection for their father in unique manners. At times, she felt an intense emotional resonance with her youngest daughter, as if her daughter’s experiences of her father’s missteps were deeply personal and profoundly affecting to her own soul.

The divorce process resumed and was concluded in the year 2011. Mathew, who is a father to a son and daughter born in 2010 with two separate ex-partners, has been wedded to Gena Knowles since 2013.

Tina went on to marry Richard Lawson in 2015 but filed for divorce in 2023.

Unlike with her first husband, however, Tina’s second marriage didn’t end over some big betrayal.

In her book, “Matriarch“, she clarified that she had been friends with Richard for numerous years prior to their 10-year relationship. She went on to say that he possesses admirable qualities, but they failed to bring them out in each other. As she reached the age of 69, she recognized that she deserved a lot more and yearned for happiness. She desired someone who would be joyful upon her entrance into a room.

Tina wrote that she made the decision to divorce Richard “totally without malice.”

In 2024, Tina had a lumpectomy following a stage 1 breast cancer diagnosis. Not just anyone, but Beyoncé, Solange, Angie, and Kelly Rowland came to visit her at the hospital. Even more remarkably, Beyoncé took Tina home with her afterwards and kept in regular contact with Tina’s doctor to ensure her mother’s wellbeing.

Tina wrote, ‘Beyoncé had me stay at her place to oversee my recovery, just like a mother or I would do.’ This means that Beyoncé took care of Tina during her recuperation, similar to how a parent or Tina herself would.
