A new game in the souls-like genre has arrived, and while it doesn’t necessarily mean frustration, it does imply tough challenges. As usual for this type of game, players will encounter numerous challenging bosses, some of which may bring many player’s journeys to a halt. In the case of The First Berserker: Khazan, the first boss you’ll come across is Yetuga. This massive Yeti isn’t shy about fighting and isn’t known for holding back its attacks. Unlike other souls-like games, where the first boss is invincible, this one can be defeated – and it’s crucial to progress through the story. So, if you find yourself struggling against it, here are some tips to help you emerge victorious.
Yetuga Boss Fight
As the battle commences, you’ll notice Yetuga employing attacks similar to other yetis in “The First Berserker: Khazan”. His primary strategy includes a four-hit sequence culminating in two swift strikes. The most straightforward method to evade this attack is by countering each strike with a parry. If you’re already adept at parrying, great! But if not, don’t fret. Mastering the art of dying and retrying is the essence of Souls-likes.
At specific moments, Yetuga will prepare and launch an assault, slamming the ground with its first fist. If this strike connects with you, a significant portion of your HP will be depleted. In case you manage to block it, but not parry, it’ll almost drain your entire stamina bar. Immediately following, it will retaliate with another hit from its other arm. Mastering the timing for these attacks can be challenging, so it’s advisable to evade both of them instead.
Following that, it’ll lift up both its arms for a destructive strike. Similar to before, try to block it to prevent any harm, but if blocking isn’t your thing, make a quick escape – this blow packs quite the punch!
During these attacks, Yetuga will rush at you to attempt a tackle. Be wary of this move since its arms can still hurt you even if you’re slightly away, as they move around. However, if you stand next to a wall, Yetuga might hit itself, causing it to stun temporarily.
On the other hand, beware of an unexpected attack. If you strike Yetuga from behind while it’s stunned, it will flip onto its back and potentially harm you. Therefore, always attack it from the front or sides instead.
Second Phase
Although “second phase” might not be accurate since Yetuga doesn’t have a secondary Health or Posture Bar, we refer to it this way because after dealing a critical blow (once its stamina is drained), it will display new combat maneuvers.
In “The First Berserk: Khazan”, be mindful of a frequent attack by Yetuga called a grab move. To dodge this attack, always sidestep whenever you notice the boss moving its arms backward. You’ll also get an audible cue signaling when it’s about to use the grab move, so if you hear it, make sure to move clear of its reach.
Unfortunately, this isn’t just a single grappling technique from Yetuga. After landing another crucial blow, it will execute another grab. This time, its left arm will freeze, ready to grasp you. If successful, it will hold onto you for several seconds, slam you down, and then deliver a powerful punch. This move is even more potent than the initial grab.
Additionally, be aware that it may emit a Frost Breath. In our experience, this occurred just once, and there was no occurrence in one of our trials. Should you encounter it, simply move to the other side of the beam to stay clear of it.
Before we wrap this up, here’s a summary of the strategy you must follow for Yetuga:
- Parry all of its combos.
- The quick ones are easier to parry. Do not bother with the ones where it winds up its hits.
- Listen for the sound queues for the first grab move.
- If Yetuga is far from you and moves its arms backward, roll away. Don’t try to parry this move.
- For the second grab move, keep an eye on its left hand.
- If it glows, move away.
Besides charged attacks, it’s particularly effective to use them against this monster. If you can strike a few on its head, Yetuga will flip onto its back, providing an opportunity for you to take a few more swings.
