Following a close call with execution, Hans is eager to depart from Trosky Castle. Despite an initially unfavorable encounter, Von Bergow finds Hans and Henry’s story about being messengers plausible. Though Hans manages to convey the message, Von Bergow remains vague in his response. Instead, he instructs both Henry and Hans to seek help from a nearby noble for the “Back in the Saddle” mission. However, there appears to be something suspicious at Nebakov Fortress, so it’s crucial to conduct a thorough investigation before advancing with the main quest of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Back in the Saddle Quest Guide
In the initial part of the Back on the Trail mission, things are rather routine and peaceful. After chatting with Von Bergow, you can accompany the chamberlain to your room, where you’ll recover your lost gear and get some well-deserved rest. You might as well drop by the stable for a chat with Kabat, who will propose a fresh steed for you. Although this new horse boasts superior stats, it’s usually wiser to keep using Pebbles if he’s still in your possession.
When you’re all set, you’ll get a chance to converse with Hans, and then both of you will make your way towards Nebakov Fortress in “Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2”. Apart from talking, there’s an added fun element – a friendly race between the two of you. If you manage to outpace him during this leisurely race, Hans will reward you with 55 Groschens.
At the fortress, you’ll find a warm welcome from the owner and his companions. While Hans engages with the noble, Henry must bide his time. In this interval, you could engage one of the men in a sparring match or a round of dice. Despite the cordial atmosphere, you might sense that Nebakov Fortress is not quite as it seems.
How To Investigate Nebakov Fortress in KCD2
At Nebakov Fortress, you can engage in conversations with several individuals. While your guide might casually comment that the nobleman possesses some exceptional horses, allegedly obtained from his family members, a stablehand outside the fortress shares a different account. Indeed, there seem to be numerous horses within the fortress, and Henry is becoming increasingly curious and skeptical about the origins of these horses.
In the Back in the Saddle mission, you have an opportunity to join another race. If you manage to win this race, you’ll receive a fantastic saddle for no cost. However, it might be challenging to win if you’re riding Pebbles. Additionally, you can spend time with Klara. If your goal is to court her, she’ll require assistance in collecting some herbs and healing three wounded soldiers. Yet, she seems hesitant to discuss the unusual events at Nebakov Fortress. Any attempt to prompt her about these occurrences will likely make her upset.
How To Sneak Into Prison
To uncover detailed facts about Nebakov Fortress, it’s essential that you find a discreet way to gather information, as entering the prison isn’t feasible due to its current state of security. Unfortunately, the door is secured and there’s a guard posted outside. Trying to pick the lock won’t be effective with so many guards on duty. Instead, you should aim to acquire the prison key from Guard Hertel. Here’s a plan to achieve this:
1. Observe the guard’s routine and find an opportunity when he’s distracted or away.
2. Disguise yourself as someone familiar to him, if possible.
3. When you have his attention, subtly request the key without arousing suspicion.
4. If he refuses, try to distract him long enough for you to grab the key when he puts it down.
5. Once you have the key, quickly return to your hiding spot and wait for the right moment to use it.
- Enter the kitchen via the door next to the prison.
- Pass through another door to your left.
- Sneak your way behind Guard Hertel and pickpocket him.
- Grab the key and return outside.
- Convince Guard Hertel that someone is looking for him.
Attempting to pickpocket Guard Hertel isn’t going to be a walk in the park, as I’ve struggled with it myself multiple times during this part. It would be wise to save your game before giving it a go. Aim for a time frame of 10 to 12 seconds when attempting the pickpocketing action. The prison key is typically found in the lower compartments.
Guard Hertel can be tricky to pickpocket, so save your game first. Try to pickpocket him within 10-12 seconds, and the prison key is usually stored in the bottom slots.

Upon entering, have a conversation with the detainee who will assert that he is truly the noble and that marauders have seized control of Nebakov Fortress. Remember, it’s crucial not to squander time within the prison as the guard won’t linger for long, and you can only depart through the main entrance. Avoid delving into excessive inquiries; instead, make haste with your escape.
Following his conversation with the leader, there’s no need for action on your part other than waiting. Typically, it takes around six hours for Hans to finish. When he emerges, share with him the findings, and both of you can promptly depart from the fortress on horseback.
