In the game Oblivion, Will-o-the-wisps are a peculiar adversary as they appear invulnerable to any kind of harm and persistently chase after you. Their relentless pursuit mirrors their dangerous nature, allowing them to deplete your health and magical energy if they manage to get near.
You’re likely to stumble upon these glowing spirits in the depths of monster lairs, however, they may also appear near Azura’s Shrine following the Blood of the Daedra quest and outside the Swampy Cave once you embark on the Fighters Guild’s Mystery at Harlun’s Watch mission. Regardless of their location, it’s generally wise to steer clear of will-o-the-wisps. If an encounter is unavoidable, then knowing how to eliminate them becomes crucial.
How to kill will-o-the-wisps in Oblivion
Will-o-the-wisps appear invulnerable due to their immunity to regular harm and poison. Yet, they do have a vulnerability: they can be harmed by silver weapons, Daedric weapons, enchanted weapons, and magic. Moreover, the Reflect Spell is beneficial as it reverses their absorptive attacks; instead of draining your health and magicka, you’ll receive healing.
As a mage gamer, I find that will-o-the-wisps are relatively easy to handle since they’re vulnerable to magic. The more potent my magical abilities, the swifter their demise. However, beware! If I get too close, these ghosts can siphon my magical energy, so it’s crucial to maintain a safe distance and stay alert.
Instead of them, melee characters find it significantly harder as ordinary iron or steel attacks barely scratch the surface against these ghostly foes. To successfully engage with these spirits, you’ll need a silver weapon at the very least, which might require some time to acquire. A silver bow would be especially beneficial in this situation, allowing you to maintain a safe distance.
It’s seldom wise to confront a ghost using only your bare hands, mainly because they can drain your vitality and magical energy when you’re in close proximity. Until you reach Journeyman level (50 or higher) in hand-to-hand combat skills, you won’t be able to inflict any damage on them with your fists at all. Therefore, it will take much longer to handle this adversary if you prefer to use your fists instead of a weapon.
After successfully vanquishing a will-o-the-wisp, you can plunder it to obtain glow essence. This precious component is highly sought after in alchemy, particularly for brewing Reflect Spell elixirs. However, you’ll also require it to activate the Shrine of Azura. Glow essence exhibits these properties:
1. It’s an essential ingredient for crafting Reflect Spell potions.
2. You need it to activate the Shrine of Azura.
3. It has other uses in alchemy, though its specific effects are not specified here.
