As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for the dark and twisted, I find myself eagerly awaiting Netflix’s adaptation of How to Kill Your Family, based on Bella Mackie’s best-selling novel. Having traversed the cinematic landscape from Hitchcock’s Psycho to Black Swan, I can confidently say that this story of family, rejection, and revenge resonates with a raw, visceral energy that promises to keep me glued to my screen.

In a new adaptation, Netflix is bringing to life Bella Mackie’s popular novel, “How to Kill Your Family.” The highly anticipated series will feature Anya Taylor-Joy taking on the lead role.

Inspired by the top-selling novel with the same title, “How to Kill Your Family” narrates the story of Grace Bernard, who is often overlooked as the child of wealthy magnate, Simon Artemis (portrayed by Taylor-Joy).

In the novel, Grace sets out on a path of vengeance, slaying relatives along the way. However, it’s unclear if she ended up behind bars for a crime she didn’t actually commit or if there’s more to the story.

Mackie commented that Anya is the ideal choice for portraying Grace, stating, “She seems to grasp her character more deeply than I do myself.”

Emma Moran, creator of the fantasy series Extraordinary, will take on both writing and producing roles for the show.

Moran described the character Grace as a complex, mysterious yet riotously funny villain-like figure that one might wish to create.

“Finding the right mix of playful excitement and intense brutality, as Bella does so skillfully in her book, is an exciting challenge for me. I’ve never enjoyed working on a project quite like this one, given its substantial death toll.”

In a more casual tone, Taylor-Joy’s character, Grace, is unlike typical TV series killers. Instead of immediately seeking vengeance, she waits until her father denies any memory of his affair with Grace’s mother, an event that resulted in Grace herself.

Feeling rejected by the family who should love her, her anger turns to murderous treachery as she makes her way towards a hefty inheritance.

Upon finishing the final page, Taylor-Joy realized that she was compelled to contribute to the tale’s vivid portrayal, as she expressed to Netflix.

Following a brief exploration of Bella Mackie’s online presence, I couldn’t be more excited to work alongside the exceptional team led by Sally Woodward Gentle, Lizzie Rusbridger, and Emma. I eagerly anticipate diving deeper into the project with them.
