How to mount monsters with Monster Hunter Wilds?

In the thrilling world of Monster Hunter Wilds, I can’t help but marvel at the advantages of mounting monsters. As a passionate hunter, this is an essential technique that I recommend mastering early on in your journey.

Encountering a monster within the game isn’t typically an easy task to tame, but investing that additional effort can prove advantageous in numerous aspects.

Let’s take a look at how to mount a monster inside the game effectively.

Monster Hunter Wilds mounting system explained

When you encounter a monster, you first need to meet certain requirements before you can attack it from atop. This involves building up a mount meter, which you can achieve by executing a Jump Attack. To initiate this, find a raised platform or similar elevated surface, such as a ledge, and jump onto it first.

From an elevated position, execute the Jump Attack by clicking the M1 Mouse Button/Triangle/Y key. If you strike the monster successfully, a portion of the meter will progress. Repeatedly perform this action to completely fill the meter, and you’ll then have the ability to ride the monster as your next mount.

All mount-based attacks in Monster Hunter Wilds

Once you have successfully mounted a monster, it will be open to different types of attacks.

Action Input Effect
Light Knife Attack M2 Mouse button/Circle/B Perform a rapid number of quick attacks that don’t do a significant amount of damage.
Strong Knife Attack M1 Mouse button/Triangle/Y Perform slower attacks that do more damage than the quicker attacks
Weapon Attack/Finisher Shift/R1/RB Deals a massive amount of damage to the monsters, but dismounts it once the attack is complete
Change Position/Target Directional Key or LS Allows you to move around the monster after mounting it
Brace Press and Hold R/R2/RT Allows you to stick onto the monster as it tries to throw you off. When prompted, you’ll have to press and hold the designated buttons to hold onto the monster. If you fail, you’ll lose a large chunk of stamina. Once your stamina comes down to 0, you’ll be automatically dismounted

In the world of Monster Hunter Wilds, where I roam as a hunter, I must wait before I can mount those towering beasts. Once mounted, I can’t immediately unleash a Finisher – instead, I need to keep dealing damage consistently. It’s only after a while that my attacks transform into a powerful Finisher. Interestingly, I can also inflict wounds on monsters using strategic Strong Knife attacks, which leave deep marks on their bodies.

Injuries become easier to harm, and you can also execute a Focused Attack to deliver more blows to the monster’s vitality. It’s not always simple to climb monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds, but becoming proficient at it can prove to be highly beneficial over time.
