Microsoft has revealed two brand new Surface gadgets: the 12-inch Surface Pro and the 13-inch Surface Laptop, available for preorder at starting prices of $799.99 and $899.99 respectively.
The start of shipments for the latest Surface hardware is set for May 20, 2025. Therefore, it will take a couple of weeks before your new PC is delivered.
New Surface Pro and Surface Laptop
The newly introduced Surface devices serve as compact counterparts to their predecessors. They share the same Snapdragon X Plus processor and fall under the category of Copilot+ PCs.
The Surface Pro 12-inch is more compact and exceptionally thin thanks to its fanless design.
The consistent borders and other styling aspects of the Surface Pro 12-inch give a contemporary feel to its tablet section. At a glance, the Surface Pro 12-inch appears quite similar to an iPad rival because of this likeness.
Instead of the usual design, the keyboard for the 12-inch Surface Pro differs significantly from recent keyboards in the Surface Pro lineup. Unlike previous models that rise and connect beneath the device’s lower bezel, this smaller keyboard does not. This modification likely aims to maintain consistent bezels across the device’s design.
Using Windows Hello face recognition, the Surface Pro 12-inch allows for biometric authentication both when used independently as a tablet and when connected to a keyboard.
Compared to the Surface Laptop 7, the Surface Laptop 13-inch model boasts a more streamlined design and offers certain features that enable it to be offered at a lower initial cost.
In simpler terms, the compact shape of the smaller Surface Laptop resembles a MacBook Air and is comfortable to hold. On the other hand, unlike the Surface Pro 12-inch, the Surface Laptop 13-inch features an integrated fan for efficient cooling.
Microsoft claims that the Surface Laptop 13-inch model can last up to 23 hours while playing videos, making it the device with the longest battery life in the Surface series. However, actual battery performance may vary based on the tasks you perform.
I wonder if the design decisions we observe in the recently launched Surfaces will extend across the entire product range. For instance, neither of these new devices feature a Surface Connect port.
