As a long-time follower of animated films and someone who grew up with the original How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, I must say that seeing the live action adaptation brings a sense of nostalgia mixed with excitement. The trailer is visually stunning, and the cast looks perfect for their roles.
Originally, the trilogy of animated films was highly successful, earning over $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. Now, it’s moving from animation to live-action, a path previously taken by Disney, as evident by the release of the live-action trailer for How to Train Your Dragon. This live action version is being directed by Dean DeBlois, a three-time Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner, who was also responsible for the creative vision behind DreamWorks Animation’s celebrated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy.
On the rugged island of Berk, generations-long enmity has existed between Vikings and dragons. However, Hiccup (Mason Thames, known for The Black Phone and For All Mankind), son of the esteemed Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated series), breaks away from this tradition. Instead of viewing Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon, as an enemy, Hiccup develops an unusual friendship with him. This bond sheds light on dragons’ true nature, causing a ripple effect that questions the fundamental values of Viking society.
Accompanied by bold and talented Astrid (BAFTA-nominated Nico Parker from Dumbo and The Last of Us), as well as eccentric blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost of Snow White and the Huntsman and Shaun of the Dead), Hiccup navigates a world filled with fear and misconceptions.
In an era where an age-old danger looms over Vikings and dragons alike, Hiccup’s bond with Toothless becomes instrumental in shaping a novel future. They embark on a journey that calls for treading the fine line of peace, transcending the limits of their realms, and reshaping the concepts of heroism and leadership.
The movie features Julian Dennison (from Deadpool 2), Gabriel Howell (Bodies), Bronwyn James (Wicked), Harry Trevaldwyn (Smothered), Ruth Codd (The Midnight Club), BAFTA-nominated Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Murray McArthur (Game of Thrones). How to Train Your Dragon is crafted by DeBlois, who both writes and directs it.
