How to watch Marvel movies in order: MCU chronological timeline and release order

How to watch Marvel movies in order: MCU chronological timeline and release order

As a long-time Marvel fan and someone who has followed the MCU since its inception, I strongly believe that watching the movies in release order is the best way to fully immerse yourself in this intricately woven cinematic universe.

With Deadpool and Wolverine hitting theaters, now is a great opportunity to re-watch the Marvel films that set the stage for Wade Wilson joining the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe).

In Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we find ourselves deep into the action, with Phase Six just around the corner. There’s an abundance of thrilling releases coming up, such as “Agatha: Cackle and Chaos,” “Captain America: New World Order,” “Thunderbolts,” and the revamped “Fantastic Four” – making it an ideal moment to dive in!

For avid Marvel fans, it’s crucial not to skip any humorous allusions, hidden meanings, surprises in the ending credits, or winks to the past. So, where should you begin your journey in the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe?

How to watch Marvel movies in chronological order

How to watch Marvel movies in order: MCU chronological timeline and release order

In the sequence of Marvel films, Captain America: The First Avenger is actually the oldest story, as it is set during World War II. This is where a scrawny Steve Rogers receives the extraordinary Super Soldier Serum for the first time.

In more simplified terms, the most recent movies in the order they were set are “Thor: Love and Thunder” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which came out in 2022. However, because of the time leap in “Avengers: Endgame,” these films actually occur around the year 2026.

A number of viewers hold the opinion that experiencing the MCU films in the order of their release date is the most effective way to watch them. This approach allows elements to be introduced naturally, as the characters in the story come across them. For instance, this method makes Nick Fury’s appearance in Avengers: Infinity War more rewarding, since viewers will have previously seen Captain Marvel (released a year later in cinemas) and thus have the necessary context.

In some situations, this can actually be problematic, like with Ant-Man and the Wasp. Although most of the film takes place before Infinity War, its after-credits scene reveals the ending of the Avengers’ massive crossover event.

The following list of films and TV series are based on Disney+’s official viewing order.

Here are the Marvel movies in chronological viewing order:

  1. Captain America: The First Avenger (1942)
  2. Captain Marvel (1995)
  3. Iron Man (2010)
  4. Iron Man 2 (2011)
  5. The Incredible Hulk (2011)
  6. Thor (2011)
  7. The Avengers (2012)
  8. Thor: The Dark World (2013)
  9. Iron Man 3 (2012)
  10. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
  11. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
  12. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
  13. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
  14. Ant-Man (2015)
  15. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
  16. Black Widow (2016, excluding post-credits scene)
  17. Black Panther (2016)
  18. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2016)
  19. Doctor Strange (2016-2017)
  20. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
  21. Ant-Man and the Wasp (2017)
  22. Avengers: Infinity War (2017)
  23. Avengers: Endgame (2017-2022)
  24. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2023)
  25. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2023)
  26. Eternals (2023, excluding flashbacks)
  27. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2024)
  28. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2025)
  29. Thor: Love and Thunder (2026)
  30. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2026)
  31. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2026)
  32. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2026)
  33. The Marvels (2026)
  34. Deadpool & Wolverine (2029-ish)

A number of moviegoers hold the opinion that experiencing the MCU films in the order of their release is the most effective way to watch them. For example, this approach makes Nick Fury’s appearance in Infinity War more rewarding since viewers will have previously seen Captain Marvel (premiered in theaters the year after), which sets the stage for his role.

In contrast, there are situations where this occurs to the disadvantage, for instance, with Ant-Man and The Wasp. Although most of it takes place prior to Infinity War, its after-credits scene reveals the ending of the blockbuster ensemble story.

The above list of films and TV series are based on Disney+’s official viewing order.

Meanwhile, below you can find the Marvel TV shows in chronological viewing order:

How to watch Marvel movies in order: MCU chronological timeline and release order

An alternative approach for those finding the chronological sequence a bit perplexing is to just experience the Marvel films based on their original release dates. This method organizes the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) narrative into neatly defined “phases” as well.

The initial three parts are collectively known as the Infinity Saga. They start with the appearance of the Avengers team and conclude with the intricate, time-jumping spectacle that is Avengers: Endgame.

By observing this process, you’ll experience the same Marvel cinematic universe adventure that has captivated millions worldwide. This will give you a unique perspective on how the series evolved from a humble superhero story into an epic cosmic saga.

As a long-time fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I’ve come to appreciate the intricacies of their storytelling, especially when it comes to their interconnected narrative. However, I understand that some viewers might be concerned about watching certain stories out of their intended order, such as the origin of Captain America or the first encounter between Nick Fury and Captain Marvel.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) started in 2008 with the release of “Iron Man” and has since then included films such as “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which came out in 2022, with more movies set to be added to this sequence in the upcoming year.

As a longtime film enthusiast and someone who has grown up with the Spider-Man franchise, I must admit that I was quite disappointed to find that Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man movies were not available on the platform at the time of writing. Having been a fan since the early 2000s, I have watched each new installment as they hit theaters, and it feels odd to see such notable additions missing from my go-to streaming service. Given that these films are co-produced with Sony Pictures, I can only assume that licensing agreements or negotiations are still underway. Nonetheless, this gap in the platform’s offerings leaves me feeling a tad disconnected from the cinematic universe I have grown to love.

Luckily, you can buy Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home digitally for your collection, and they’re also streamable on various platforms.

The following MCU television series and specials are also available on Disney+.

  • WandaVision

What’s the best way to watch the Marvel movies in order?

How to watch Marvel movies in order: MCU chronological timeline and release order

If it’s up to you, we suggest simply watching in the original release order of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. This is the sequence in which they were produced, making it the best way to experience the storyline for newcomers. The post-credits scenes, Easter eggs, and other intricacies will make more sense when viewed in this order.

If you’re new to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we don’t recommend starting with the chronological order. Although using the timeline might seem like a good idea initially, it could negatively affect your enjoyment of the MCU for several reasons.

To begin with, some characters’ backstories might be hard to recall since they may not reappear until much later in the films. For example, Captain Marvel is introduced in the second movie, but she won’t be mentioned again until over 40 screens worth of footage have passed.

Another option could be: Additionally, watching Captain Marvel as your second film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe may cause you to miss some inside jokes and references that were built up throughout the previous 17 films.

As a dedicated Marvel fan with years of immersing myself in the intricacies of their expansive universe, I wholeheartedly believe that revisiting the saga from the beginning is a must for any true enthusiast.
