How to watch One Piece in order

As a longtime fan of anime and manga, I’ve had the pleasure of following One Piece since its early days. It’s been an incredible journey filled with laughter, adventure, and some truly unforgettable characters. The series has managed to maintain its popularity for over two decades, which is no small feat in the world of entertainment.

Watching One Piece from start to finish, with its more than 1,100 episodes, numerous specials, films, original video animations (OVAs), and shorts, can certainly seem like a challenging endeavor.

The anime series One Piece, which started in 1999 and was created by Eiichiro Oda, is renowned for its iconic status among all-time greats. The storyline is nothing short of grandiose, set within a pirate fantasy realm where the protagonist, Monkey D Luffy, heads up a group called the Straw Hat Pirates.

The primary objective of Monkey D Luffy is to locate a legendary hoard called “One Piece.” However, his storyline frequently takes unexpected turns, resulting in interactions with numerous eccentric side characters as his team journeys through various parts of the world. With new installments of Eiichiro Oda’s manga being released monthly, there remains an abundance of fresh content to be transformed into screen adaptations.

To put it another way, watching One Piece isn’t something you can easily finish over a weekend due to its massive 1,100 episodes count. Even without considering Netflix’s live-action adaptation or the upcoming anime reboot called “The One Piece,” which shares the same name but could be confusing due to its title.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’m delighted to share my insider tips for embarking on an epic cinematic journey – watching One Piece in the correct sequence! This beloved anime series spans countless adventures and unforgettable characters. So, let me be your guide through the high seas of One Piece, ensuring you don’t miss a single pirate’s tale along the way!

How to watch One Piece in order

As someone who’s deeply appreciative of the captivating world of One Piece, I strongly advise you not to miss out on the journey from the very start. With over 1,100 episodes under its belt, it might seem tempting to dive in midway, but trust me, starting from the beginning and watching it sequentially will allow you to fully immerse yourself in the richness of its narrative.

Our viewing guide includes all of the specials, films and OVAs, divided into individual sagas (ie. longer storylines) and episodic arcs – just in case you do want to skip to a later section of Monkey D Luffy’s adventures. We’ve also divided the list into two separate blocks which take place before and after the time skip, right up to the latest movie, One Piece Film: Red, which came out in 2022.

How to watch One Piece movies in order

If you really want to whizz through One Piece for a taste of what it’s like, you could also focus solely on the 15 films that have been released to date. Still, if that’s all you’ve got time for, here are all the One Piece movies in order of release, as well as how they relate to the main show.

  • One Piece: The movie (2000) | After episode 18
  • Clockwork Island Adventure (2001) | After episode 52
  • Chopper’s Kingdom on the Island of Strange Animals (2002) | After episode 102

How to watch Netflix’s live-action One Piece

You can start watching Netflix’s live-action series whenever you want, as it presents an innovative, eight-episode rendition of the East Blue saga from the original manga.

Apart from functioning independently as a standalone watch, the live-action version of One Piece is more rewarding if you’ve watched the initial season of the anime first. This fresh perspective enriches an already familiar tale. Currently, it can only be streamed on Netflix, with a second season set to premiere soon.

Do I need to watch One Piece to understand Netflix’s The One Piece anime reboot?

It seems that Netflix is collaborating with WIT Studio, known for its work on the iconic Attack on Titan anime series, to reimagine the initial arcs of One Piece. This will start with the East Blue saga, which was adapted into a live-action version by Netflix.

Thankfully, it’s not necessary for you to have watched the original One Piece anime before enjoying Netflix’s version as they share the same storyline. However, the new adaptation will feature a more contemporary anime aesthetic compared to the series that started in the late ’90s. Let’s hope there’s still some traditional hand-drawn animation included!

Although not everyone is entirely thrilled about this development, there’s no denying it’s an intriguing endeavor that we eagerly anticipate unfolding.
