As a devoted fan of the Man of Steel, I must say that revisiting the Christopher Reeve-led Superman movies is like taking a trip down memory lane. Each film not only showcases Reeve’s exceptional acting skills but also offers a glimpse into the life of a man who embodied the very essence of heroism – both on and off screen.
Following a brief stint in cinemas, the documentary titled “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” is set to take flight on home streaming platforms. This film includes exclusive home videos and personal records that narrate the poignant and inspiring tale of actor and activist Christopher Reeve, who gained fame for portraying Superman in the 1978 film “Superman“, as well as its sequels “Superman II” (1980), “Superman III” (1983), and “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” (1987).
Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Studios, HBO Documentary Films, and CNN Films obtained the acclaimed documentary from the Sundance Film Festival, which later screened in selected theaters on September 11 and September 25 (Reeve’s birthday). Following this, Warner Bros. Pictures expanded its release to North American theaters on October 11. The highly-rated Super/Man documentary, currently holding a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, will first be available for digital viewing before eventually being added to Max streaming platform. What Is Christopher Reeve’s Documentary About?
The synopsis: “The story of Christopher Reeve is an astonishing rise from unknown actor to iconic movie star, and his definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman set the benchmark for the superhero cinematic universes that dominate cinema today. Reeve portrayed the Man of Steel in four Superman films and played dozens of other roles that displayed his talent and range as an actor, before being injured in a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down.
“After becoming a quadriplegic, he became a charismatic leader and activist in the quest to find a cure for spinal cord injuries, as well as a passionate advocate for disability rights and care – all while continuing his career in cinema in front of and behind the camera and dedicating himself to his beloved family.”
Described as “a moving and vivid cinematic telling of Reeve’s remarkable story,” Super/Man is directed by BAFTA Award-nominated filmmakers Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui (McQueen) and features the first extended interviews ever filmed with Reeve’s three children about their father, and interviews with the A-list Hollywood actors who were Reeve’s colleagues and friends, including Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, and Jeff Daniels. Viewers also hear narration by Reeve with audio from his autobiography, “Still Me.”

Three sinister antagonists from Krypton create chaos on Earth, all while Superman and Lois Lane are deepening a long-anticipated romantic relationship. This budding romance could potentially strip Superman of his supernatural abilities. The upcoming installment places the Man of Steel against General Zod (portrayed by Terence Stamp), Non (Jack O’Halloran), and Ursa (Sarah Douglas).

Superman III (1983)
In the film “Superman III“, you’ll encounter Gus Gorman (played by Richard Pryor), an unassuming computer whiz who treats a keyboard like a weapon. This is the microelectronic peril that tests Superman to his limits. Christopher Reeve returns as our favorite superhero, showcasing Clark Kent’s human side as he reconnects with his old flame Lana Lang (Annette O’Toole) at a Smallville High School reunion. Remarkably, when Superman is corrupted by Kryptonite, Reeve masterfully portrays both roles, demonstrating exceptional acting prowess.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)
Reeve considered “Superman IV” as the “most individual film in the entire series” since it embodies what Superman symbolizes and his role. In this movie, Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman), a dealer of nuclear weapons, creates a new adversary for Superman – the radiation-enhanced Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow). The epic battle between these two leads to a series of spectacular events where Superman saves iconic landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, halts an eruption on Mount Etna, and rebuilds the Great Wall of China.
