The PR manager at Warhorse Studios mentioned that working specifically on the Xbox Series S edition of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has positively impacted the overall development process of the game across various platforms.
During an interview on the Iron Lords Podcast, Tobias Stolz-Zwilling (Warhorse Studios PR manager) mentioned that the optimizations made for the Xbox Series S significantly aided other platforms. He explained that since certain aspects needed to be scaled back and programming required more cleverness, the benefits of being careful during development were also seen in other versions of the game.
In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, they utilize an adapted form of Crytek’s CryEngine. However, it’s significant to mention that Warhorse Studios has extensively tailored this engine variant, filling it with distinctive technology and features. This enhancement enables the game to run a sprawling medieval open world complete with numerous simulation elements.
On the Xbox Series S, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 operates in a single mode at 30 frames per second (FPS). However, you can enjoy 30 FPS quality and 60 FPS performance modes on both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Furthermore, there are some extra adjustments exclusively available on the PlayStation 5 Pro.
Xbox Series S continues providing challenges and opportunities
Following the launch of the Xbox Series S, the response from developers has been intriguing to observe, as some have found the limitations of a less powerful device frustrating, whereas others have leveraged these restrictions to offer extra visual settings.
Initially, Baldur’s Gate 3 by Larian Studios didn’t include a split-screen mode on the Xbox Series S when it was released in December 2023. However, after more than a year, the team’s ongoing improvements have enabled this feature to be added to the lower-end console. This much-anticipated feature is part of Patch 8, which is currently available for testing.
Warhorse Studios isn’t unique in finding that the development of a game for the Xbox Series S has positively impacted other stages of production. Previously, STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl developer GSC Game World discussed their experience with the Xbox Series S. They mentioned that they had to carefully optimize every megabyte of system content to make the most out of the console, which in turn improved the performance of the PC version.
I haven’t personally experienced Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 yet, but based on feedback from my team members, including reviewer Brendan Lowry, the game seems to be receiving rave reviews. In his assessment of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Brendan highlighted that the game offers an immersive open world with numerous quests, balanced combat, a compelling narrative, and top-notch visuals – essentially everything a fan of the series could desire and beyond.
