As a long-time Marvel enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall (and rise again) of various characters within the expansive universe, I must admit that “What If… Howard the Duck Got Hitched?” was an absolute delight to behold.
In an exciting twist, the Marvel series “What If…” carries on its line of humorous, imaginative tales featuring beloved characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This time around, Howard the Duck, the talking duck, exchanges vows with Darcy Lewis, who initially worked as Jane Foster’s intern in the 2011 film “Thor.” This union doesn’t just end there; they go on to have a child, which, given the cosmic nature of the Marvel Universe, leads to significant consequences. The episode that unfolds this intriguing scenario is aptly named “What If… Howard the Duck Got Married?
At first, Darcy was reluctant to go out with Howard, who happened to be a talking duck. However, it didn’t take long before she found herself deeply smitten by him, eventually leading to marriage and the birth of their child. Since they were in an interspecies relationship, the child came from an egg that hatched during a cosmic occurrence, which was unknown to them. This egg attracted significant attention from powerful beings across the universe, including Yondu Udanta, the Grandmaster, and Kaecilius, who sought it as a means for the unborn child to serve as a vessel for Dormammu on Earth.
Fortunately, Howard and Darcy receive assistance from unforeseen companions such as Nick Fury and Phil Coulson from S.H.I.E.L.D., who attempt to seize the egg, along with Loki. Yet, this aid is insufficient to shield their offspring, for they are now pursued by Malekith, Zeus, Thanos, and his Black Order. In a desperate situation, Howard and Darcy croon KISS’ famous song “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” to the egg, which inadvertently triggers its cosmic power, annihilating most of their adversaries. A hybrid baby girl, half-human and half-duck, hatches from the egg, and is warmly received by her new parents, whom they name Byrdie. Despite initial reservations, Fury eventually allows the couple and their newborn to leave, thus becoming a family.
The delight of “What If…?” lies in its knack for shining the limelight on secondary characters from the MCU, often making the primary continuity established in earlier films and shows appear less captivating by comparison. Take, for instance, “What If Howard the Duck Got Hitched?”, which maintains the exceptional quality of this series. It’s been quite intriguing to witness the rise of Howard the Duck in popular culture, given his humble beginnings as a character from the 1986 film “Howard the Duck,” a movie that was not well-received and is notable for being the first big-budget Marvel film.
Still, James Gunn revived the character from relative obscurity by reintroducing him in the post-credits scene for 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, played by Robot Chicken co-creator Seth Green. While not originating in the comics (though she would later make her comic debut in the 2023 series Scarlet Witch), Darcy has become beloved by fans for her droll sarcasm which perfectly contrasts the otherworldly events portrayed in the Thor films and WandaVision Disney+ series. Howard and Darcy’s snarky personalities are oddly perfect for one another, despite their, um, biological differences, so here’s hoping we get to see more of their relationship in future MCU projects.
