You’re doing an epic bike trip, David? Why?
Originally, I was cruising on a moped. My e-bike has a “boost” feature, and when activated, it requires minimal effort – you’re essentially gliding on an electric two-wheeler, reminiscent of a Tesla. Since Hugh is incredibly fit and has ridden the actual stage of the Tour de France, if I had used a regular bike, our conversation would have been dominated by him speaking and me gasping for breath. This wouldn’t be ideal because the program aims to capture our enjoyable chat, camaraderie, and men finding ways to communicate. It’s humorous yet heartfelt, and not overly masculine or boisterous.

Weren’t you and Hugh deadly rivals in your respective comedy duos, though?
There was indeed a noticeable strain in the dynamics of The Mary Whitehouse Experience, a ’90s BBC comedy show that featured Baddiel paired with Rob Newman and Dennis with Steve Punt. This tension primarily stemmed from Rob’s persistent desire for the show to focus solely on him and Baddiel. Over time, this ambition led to some friction, as Rob was known for being difficult to work with. However, I always had a great rapport with Hugh.
It’s like Celebrity Double-Act Wife Swap!
As a movie reviewer, I’d say:
“What an intriguing concept for a comedy series! If I could pick my ideal partner in laughter, it would be none other than Eric Morecambe, who undeniably holds the crown as the funniest man ever. However, I’d find myself firmly in the straight-man role with him.
Bob Mortimer is another brilliant choice, and he’s demonstrated his versatility by participating in a ‘wife swap,’ trading Vic Reeves for Paul Whitehouse. Or perhaps, “The One Ronnie” – the chemistry between me and Ronnie Corbett would be electric. We’d make quite the pair, resembling a shorter version of the Proclaimers.

Would you take Ronnie cycling in France? Did this show convert you?
Initially, I wasn’t deeply fond of France – my preference leaned more towards Spain or Italy. However, after our recent cycling trip, which primarily followed the Canal des Deux Mers from Arcachon to Sète, I must admit I may have underestimated its charm. The area is stunningly beautiful, the food is delightful, and the small towns are captivating. There’s a tranquil, zen-like quality to the canal, as it creates an illusion of perpetually flowing water. Cycling along it was a pleasure, and I imagine it would be even more so if one were on a boat.
The downside was that cycling caused quite a lot of discomfort for my backside, and by the end of the day, I yearned for a relaxing soak in a bath or bidet. However, all the hotels provided only showers. Also, I’m unable to do a headstand. Next time, I’ll bring along a portable bath tub to ease my sore behind.
