50 years ago, Marvel Comics introduced us to their most notorious villains with the publication of “Bring on the Bad Guys: Origins of the Marvel Comics Villains.” As a devoted cinema-goer and comic book fan, I can’t wait to see these iconic adversaries return to our screens. From the cunning Doctor Doom, who challenges the Fantastic Four, to Spider-Man’s arch-nemesis, the Green Goblin; the trickster Thor’s sibling Loki; and the formidable mutant menace Magneto from the X-Men, this collection revisited the beginnings of some of Marvel’s most powerful antagonists. Among them are Galactus, who first appeared in Fantastic Four #49, and Mephisto, who made his debut in Silver Surfer #3. It’s exciting to think that we might soon witness the return of these timeless villains on our movie screens!
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the trade paperback release, Marvel is launching a fresh seven-part series titled “Bring on the Bad Guys“. This event will consist of seven individual comics, each focusing on one villain who were originally grouped together in a single collection. These antagonists include Doctor Doom, Green Goblin, Abomination, Loki, Red Skull, Dormammu, and Mephisto.
Kicking off with “Bring on the Bad Guys: Doom” #1 in June – followed by “Green Goblin”, “Abomination”, and “Loki” in July, and then “Red Skull”, “Dormammu”, and “Mephisto” in August – this seven-part series finds Mephisto trying to gather enough souls to empower an ancient device, the Soul Forge, to rule over all human souls. Each of these villain-centric issues will also feature a bonus story by Marc Guggenheim (of “Spider-Man & Wolverine”) and introduce Sister Sorrow, a secretive character linked to Mephisto’s nefarious plot.
As a die-hard Marvel fan, I’m excited about the special Bring on the Baddies variant cover series that’s shaking things up! This unique collection imagines epic showdowns between our beloved superheroes and their formidable foes. While these battles are confined to the covers rather than the comic book pages, they still promise thrilling encounters such as the Hulk squaring off against the universe-devouring Galactus, the X-Men locking horns with the Leader, and Scarlet Witch and Vision going toe-to-toe with Mephisto.
