Hulu’s #1 Movie is a SHARK THRILLER?! You Won’t Believe This!

Shark films possess an unusual knack for drawing audiences, even if they end up being less than stellar. This trend seems to hold true for the upcoming film in 2024 titled Escape from the Deep, or another name it goes by – which has managed to climb to the top of the streaming charts, despite mixed reviews and its relatively unknown status.

Despite seemingly unlikely events, the recently released film “Last Breath,” which marks one of Julian Sands’ final performances, has found itself in a favorable spot. Some might argue that a case of mistaken identity could be contributing to its success. In 2023, we have another deep-sea movie titled “Last Breath” starring Simu Liu and Woody Harrelson. Unlike the traditional shark survival thriller, this one focuses on underwater diving.

On the surface, it might seem simple to confuse the two given the titles and nautical themes. But a closer look at the description of the movie that’s trending on Hulu reveals:

[The actual synopsis here]

Pursuing the long-submerged wreckage of warship USS Charlotte has been a lifelong passion for Levi (Julian Sands), an older expatriate who co-owns a dive tourism business in the British Virgin Islands with freshly dropped-out college student Noah (Jack Parr). When the USS Charlotte resurfaces after eight decades due to a storm, Noah’s friends visiting the island urge them all to seize the unique opportunity for a one-time dive on the rediscovered wreck before it gets taken by authorities. However, their dream dive swiftly transforms into a terrifying ordeal as they become ensnared in the gloom of the Charlotte’s interior, thirty meters underwater and with a rapidly depleting oxygen supply. To make matters worse, they realize they are not alone.

Is ‘The Last Breath‘ Worth Watching on Hulu?

Based on reviews for the film “The Last Breath,” which you can find on Rotten Tomatoes under its alternate title, this movie seems to be another letdown in the category of shark survival-horror action films. Critics rated it a mere 30%, while audiences were only slightly more enthusiastic at 36%. What appears to be the issue with the film? Typically, complaints echo those often leveled against similar shark movies.

Majority of reviews for the movie described it as “tedious” and “silly”, with Nicholas Bell from Fish Jelly Films adding that the death by shark was a fitting end for these group of silly, stupid characters who seemed to lack intelligence and were wandering aimlessly in yet another uninteresting, tension-free time-waster.

Spectators noticed comparable issues, stating that the movie seemed to repeat the same narrative found in several superior shark-attack films. Additionally, they expressed that the shallow character development made it an unappealing investment of their time.

Despite the reason, it seems clear that Hulu viewers have been drawn in significant numbers to this film, causing it to outshine well-known titles such as Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and the Kingsman series, placing it at the top of the rankings. Its longevity in this position is uncertain, but occasionally, the allure of a shark movie proves too strong for people to resist.
