Prepare to embark once more on a journey to the bleak landscape of Panem, focusing this time on one of its most troubled periods in the annals of the Hunger Games. The 50th installment of the Games, commonly referred to as the second Quarter Quell, will be the focus of the upcoming book by Suzanne Collins, the series’ author and originator. Entitled “ Sunrise on the Reaping“, this novel, set for release in March, delves deeply into the happenings of the second Quarter Quell and is narrated from the standpoint of Haymitch Abernathy, the victor of the Games we’re already familiar with.
In the initial Hunger Games trilogy, an older and seemingly disillusioned character named Haymitch played a prominent role. He had been the mentor for every District 12 tribute duo over a span of 24 years, since he was the district’s only victor himself. Although the book won’t be available for another two months, we already get a glimpse into Haymitch’s backstory.
On a Thursday, Scholastic collaborated with ‘People’ magazine to unveil the initial snippet from ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’. This preview was drawn from the first chapter of the book, specifically designed to acquaint readers with this rendition of Haymitch.
In the passage (you can find it here), Haymitch awakens on a day that coincides with both his birthday and the dreaded Reaping Day in Panem. Haymitch grapples with his birthday excitement and the apprehension shared by every teenager across the nation as the yearly Reaping approaches.
It’s common knowledge among all Panem residents that the upcoming second Quarter Quell will be challenging, given the Capitol’s announcement that the 50th Hunger Games will see double the usual number of tributes participating. Instead of just one boy and girl per district, there will now be two from each district, resulting in a total of 48 tributes representing the 12 districts.
In a passage from Sunrise on the Reaping, a thick fog envelops the dilapidated, gray homes of the Seam in a comforting yet unsettling manner, as the sounds of children’s frightened dreams echo. These sounds have grown more common lately as the 50th Hunger Games approach, reflecting my growing anxiety. This is the Quarter Quell – double the number of participants. I try to suppress my concerns, reminding myself that there’s nothing I can do to alter it. It’s like having two Hunger Games at once. There’s no way to predict the outcome of the reaping or what comes next. So, I resist giving in to nightmares, refrain from panicking, and deny the Capitol this satisfaction. They have taken enough already.
The novel titled “Sunrise at the Harvest” will be available on bookstore shelves starting March 18th. A feature film adaptation by Lionsgate is underway, with Francis Lawrence, a veteran director of the franchise, planning to bring it to life on the big screen in 2026.
