Hunter Schafer is finding power in her voice.
Following the revelation that a passport issued by the United States identified Euphoria’s star as male, despite her having female-designated official papers for many years, she explained her reasons for choosing to address this issue publicly.
Hunter shared with TopMob News during the Film Independent Spirit Awards on February 22 that it was an impromptu decision. He’s still trying to make sense of the situation, but in that instant, he felt compelled to reveal what was happening. 26-year-old individual, who identified as transgender during high school, recently announced an update on TikTok Stories, following the arrival of their newly issued passport.
She clarified, “My gender on legal documents like my driver’s license and passport was altered during my teenage years. Ever since, they have all indicated ‘female’.
Last year, when Hunter had to get a new passport because she lost her old one in Spain, she indicated her gender as female on the form. But, surprisingly, upon receiving it, she found out that the recorded gender had been altered to male.
Although Hunter made clear that her TikTok video wasn’t intended to stir up drama or seek comfort, she felt it was important to share the truth about what was happening.
The news about the actress who played Cuckoo was announced a month following President Donald Trump’s January 20th executive order, which mandates agencies to acknowledge only the genders assigned at birth. A representative from the State Department declined to comment specifically on this case due to privacy laws and regulations, as reported by TopMob News.
As a devoted follower, I can confirm that our department is diligently carrying out the President’s Executive Orders and focusing on administration priorities. Consequently, we are exclusively providing U.S. passports with a gender marker that aligns with the applicant’s biological sex, as defined in the Executive Order.
But Hunter emphasized that she doesn’t “give a f–k that they put an M on my passport.”
She asserted, “It doesn’t change really anything about me or my transness.”
Meanwhile, stars like Nava Mau also reflected on the policies’ impact on the trans community.
The actress from Baby Reindeer stated to TopMob at the Film Independent Spirit Awards that it’s clear we’re dealing with extremely strict policies from the administration. It’s crucial to acknowledge how we need to be thoughtful and understand how such policies impact those who are already disadvantaged in our society.
As she put it, “It’s not something we can ignore.”
