Hunter x Hunter Creator Honors Dragon Ball With New Cover, Special Letter

As a gamer with decades of anime and manga under my belt, I can confidently say that this latest collaboration between Dragon Ball and Hunter x Hunter is an absolute delight for fans like me! The fusion of these two iconic stories brings together the best of both worlds, showcasing the incredible talent and creative synergy between Akira Toriyama and Yoshihiro Togashi.

When people label Dragon Ball as one of the most impactful stories ever made, they truly mean it. Back in the day, artist Akira Toriyama breathed life into Son Goku, and the shonen genre underwent a significant transformation shortly afterward. Nowadays, the franchise has garnered respect from top-tier manga creators, with even the creator of Hunter x Hunter jumping on board.

Today, the Dragon Ball Super Gallery project shared its newest addition, showcasing artwork by Yoshihiro Togashi – famed artist of Hunter x Hunter. He’s breathed new life into a classic Dragon Ball cover for volume five.

Clearly visible above is the near-perfection of the “Dragon Ball” artwork. It showcases Goku donning a green gi while maneuvering on Burma’s red motorbike. Originally appearing on the cover of volume five, Yoshihiro has added his unique touch to this piece. Notably, Gon Freeces has been incorporated into the revised cover, which seems quite appropriate given the circumstances.

The popular manga series Dragon Ball was first introduced many years ago, with Akira Toriyama collaborating with Yoshihiro for an extended period. Tragically, the artist passed away in March 2024, marking the beginning of his career in manga in 1978. Yoshihiro joined forces a few years later in 1986, and he debuted his successful manga Yu Yu Hakusho a year after the launch of Dragon Ball. The deep connection between Toriyama and Yoshihiro is undeniable, making this tribute all the more meaningful. In fact, Yoshihiro himself elaborated on their bond in a heartfelt message to fans, which you can read below:

“Enjoying myself immensely while drawing this, it seemed like I had stepped back into those old times! Finishing up, I returned to the present and almost shed tears, so I immediately picked up Dragon Ball volume five sitting nearby for comfort. Indeed, I’m not alone – Toriyama-sensei is with me!”

As a passionate manga enthusiast with years of dedication to this captivating genre, I must say that if you haven’t yet encountered Yoshihiro Togashi and his masterpiece “Hunter x Hunter,” then you’re in for an unforgettable journey! Despite brief hiatuses, the artist is still diligently working on this iconic series. For English-speaking fans like myself, Viz Media provides easy access to the manga.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my admiration for Gon, a lad hailing from the countryside, who harbors grand ambitions. Bucking against Aunt Mito’s warnings, Gon chooses to follow in his father’s footsteps and strive for the title of a legendary Hunter. The aspirants embark on their journey by a tempestuous sea, where Gon crosses paths with Leorio and Kurapika, the only other candidates who manage to keep their sea legs. Having weathered the perils of the tumultuous seas, Gon and his comrades must now demonstrate their worth through a series of trials to find the elusive Exam Hall. The question remains, will they ever step out of there alive…?
