As a fan who grew up during the era of cassette tapes and MTV, I must say that Hysteria! has truly captured the essence of my youth with its exceptional 1980s soundtrack. The series’ creator, Matthew Scott Kane, did an outstanding job in curating the music for this show, with a little help from their fantastic music supervisor.
In the fresh Peacock TV show titled “Hysteria!”, the music matches the 1980s setting perfectly. With the plot unfolding amidst the Satanic panic of that era, it’s only fitting that bands like Mötley Crüe, Black Sabbath, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, and Judas Priest are featured on the soundtrack. Additionally, you’ll find songs from Belinda Carlisle, New Kids on the Block, and Queen. Interestingly, “Psycho Killer” by Talking Heads also plays a significant role. Given the show’s time and location, it’s no shock to see these artists, but you might wonder why some other popular acts are absent from the soundtrack.
During an interview with ComicBook, we chatted with Matthew Scott Kane, the brain behind the series, about the process of creating the soundtrack that’s integral to the show. Kane not only shared insights into how each song was carefully assembled, acknowledging the significant role of the music supervisor, but also disclosed an interesting tidbit: even legends like KISS declined to let their song be featured in our series.
In simpler terms, Kane shared that we had an exceptional music supervisor named Jen Malone. If you gave her any track, no matter how rare or obscure, she would locate it and deliver it flawlessly. For instance, she managed to secure a Pixies cover of a song from the movie Eraserhead, which had numerous legal complications. Similarly, she got us a song by a Swedish band called Father. Bathory, but there was one song, ‘Beth’ by KISS, that even she couldn’t find due to rights issues, and we all chuckled about it.
He added, “We weren’t able to use ‘Beth’ by KISS in our production due to religious concerns about incorporating the song into our show. I was unaware of the Knights in Satan’s Service’s stringent rules regarding the shows where their music could be featured. However, we honored their choice and found an alternative that we believe suits our current needs better, thanks to our composer.

However, things take a dark turn when a string of strange murders, kidnappings, and alleged supernatural events occur, igniting a leather-clad witch hunt that ultimately points back to them.
Oh my, here’s a fun one titled “Hysteria!” featuring Julie Bowen (from “Modern Family”), Anna Camp (“Pitch Perfect”), and the legendary Bruce Campbell (“The Evil Dead”, “Army of Darkness”).
