I Aim to Portray Race Authentically

According to Steven Knight, who was relaxing in an upscale London hotel room, he learned from Peaky Blinders that a compelling tale can strike a chord anywhere on the globe, regardless of its locale.

I recently inquired from the individual responsible for transforming 1920s Birmingham into the most captivating spot on Earth if he could replicate that feat with Victorian East End London, the backdrop for his upcoming Disney+ series A Thousand Blows. He appears quite confident about it.

According to Knight, “The show is packed with everything needed for it.” It offers a unique universe governed by its own laws, captivating acting, visually appealing, and relatable to the audience’s daily lives.

At 65 years old, Knight carries a justified sense of assurance. The second installment of his World War II drama SAS Rogue Heroes was a massive success, and a Peaky Blinders movie is in the works. Even his ska-themed series This Town, which initially received skepticism from critics, turned out to be successful in his eyes.

He expresses his affection for this place, stating, “This town holds a special place in my heart.” Regarding criticism, he advises, “It’s essential to disregard external opinions and focus on what truly matters – your own thoughts and feelings.

Remarkably creative and at times brutally violent, A Thousand Blows is set in a dimly lit 1880s Victorian criminal underworld, where newcomers Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall) discover potential in the gruesome world of bare-knuckle boxing.

Is it beneficial for Knight, who’s primarily worked with the BBC up until now, to have a budget on par with that of Disney for this new project?

He notes, “It’s a pleasant sensation, but the BBC has been around for so long that they should be well-equipped to handle their relative financial disadvantage compared to others.” In other words, when resources like money or power aren’t available, one must find creative alternatives. For instance, instead of resorting to destructive actions such as exploding a car or demolishing a bridge, you have to think of alternative solutions.

The wealth from Disney enabled Knight to imaginatively create a captivating and at times violent depiction of the East End, complete with cobblestone streets, narrow riverside passages, bustling gin palaces, all set within an abandoned brewery in Mortlake, just west of London.

As a film enthusiast, I marveled at the extraordinary recreation of London within the brewery’s walls – it was nothing short of magical. It became our playground, a place where imagination could run wild. Contrary to popular belief, Disney executives didn’t swarm over this creative haven, dictating every move. Instead, it was a testament to the British way of working, allowing the creative process to breathe freely on its own.

Why would any executive tamper with the method behind the creation of Peaky Blinders, a highly successful modern television drama? This is unlike altering the history of Tommy Shelby’s character, portrayed by Cillian Murphy, who was fictional, as Hezekiah Moscow and Alec Munroe were actual individuals.

Similarly, hard-fisted boxer Henry “Sugar” Goodson (Stephen Graham) and the female gang leader he adores, Mary Carr (Erin Doherty), who heads the notorious all-female criminal group known as the Forty Elephants. As Knight points out, these characters are based on real individuals; Mary Carr reigned as their queen, and they often pilfered goods from Harrods in such large quantities that they appeared to waddle out like elephants laden with loot. Such a tale seems too fantastical to be true.

The backstory of this knight is truly exceptional. Born into a family of seven, he grew up amidst the gritty environment of the West Midlands during the 1960s and 1970s. As he puts it, “I was engaged in genuine fights as a child. Where I lived, there was quite a bit of it.

In his youth, George, their blacksmith father, was known for his boxing skills. I recall tales of him facing off against two sets of twins in a single night and emerging victorious. He would often rouse us from sleep when we were young children to listen to Sonny Liston and Cassius Clay fight live from Madison Square Garden. He even bought us boxing gloves and taught us the art himself.

In A Thousand Blows and Peaky Blinders, it’s evident that life is kept functioning by strong women, much like Knight’s mother Ida, who worked as a cleaner and factory worker while caring for her family on a daily basis, making his childhood possible.

In many cases I’ve observed, it seems that women often embody practical wisdom, serving as the voice of common sense, while men tend to lean towards self-deception. Women, in general, appear to possess a maturity and level-headedness that men sometimes struggle to attain, myself included.

David Olusoga contributes to the show, not necessarily for advice on non-white characters, but rather to enrich the narrative. In my character development, I don’t stereotype by saying, “Here is someone of this race, and everything they do is because they are of this race.

I believe people can be complex, I tend to focus on the essence of every individual. David helps me uncover the realities of past and present situations.

According to Knight, this is significant because it helps us gain a clearer perspective on our current lives when we reflect upon the past.

Selecting a story with depth will strike a chord with current events. For instance, people are attempting to enter Britain on small boats today, while the novel ‘A Thousand Blows’ follows an individual arriving in a vast, unforgiving city. The human condition remains constant; emotions like love, jealousy, and hatred persist throughout history.

He expresses that there’s still a lot of content to discover in the real world, and he’s excited because he’s only just begun.
