I Can’t Be Everyone’s Princess!

Rachel Zegler knows she can’t be everybody’s princess.

Indeed, she acknowledges and takes into account the feedback received following her casting as the lead in Disney’s 2021 live-action adaptation of the 1937 animated film Snow White.

In a recent interview with Vogue Mexico, the 23-year-old expressed that they view the public’s enthusiasm for this movie as a sign of deep passion. They feel incredibly privileged to contribute to something that stirs such strong emotions in others. However, it’s important to remember that we won’t always agree with everyone about our feelings, and all we can do is strive to give our best.

As a dedicated follower, I found myself in a similar situation to Halle Bailey when it was announced that the West Side Story actress of Colombian descent would be playing Snow White. Some fans expressed racist criticism, arguing that her casting didn’t align with their perception of Snow White, much like the controversy surrounding Halle Bailey’s casting as Ariel in The Little Mermaid.

For Rachel, witnessing the impact Halle made on young girls who shared a similar appearance intensified her desire to assume the role. This was reminiscent of how she had personally bonded with Belle from Beauty and the Beast as a child, since the actress seemed most like her among the princesses she knew.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, let me share my perspective: “In movies like these, it was quite rare to find characters who resembled us, and that included having brown hair, much like Belle. Yet, today, I can’t help but marvel at the stunning representation for Black girls worldwide when Halle stars as Ariel in The Little Mermaid (2023).

Beyond the controversy sparked by those doubting her suitability, the actress from “Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” also encountered criticism due to comments she made in 2022 regarding the movie’s storyline, suggesting that the prince’s pursuit of Snow White could be seen as stalking. However, Rachel has assured viewers that while the film retains its traditional aspects, the contemporary twist carries a more profound message.

Rachel pointed out that it’s crucial for viewers to understand that Disney skillfully blends the timeless charm of the 1937 classic animation with an introduction tailored for a new era.

What makes her special isn’t any magical ability, but rather the immense compassion in her heart – for people, animals, and her unwavering faith in the inherent good within all things,” she pointed out. “I truly believe that if we embraced this perspective more, the world would benefit greatly.
