In a simpler and more natural way of expression: The cooperative roguelike version of Elden Ring by FromSoftware, titled Elden Ring Nightreign, is now available on Windows PC and Steam. Console versions will follow shortly. However, the day one patch notes suggest that some frame rate drops might occur with high-end graphics cards. Nevertheless, after playing it extensively for my review over the past two weeks, I can assure you that it’s been running flawlessly without any framerate problems at all.
I must confess that I’m not particularly fond of the fact that the latest spin-off is restricted to 60 FPS, similar to Elden Ring. Although I didn’t encounter any frame rate drops, there were occasional stutters. Overall, however, my experience has been quite positive, and it has been superior to what I experienced with the main game in 2022 when it was first released.
There appears to be only one issue with this: Take a peek at the picture that follows, and let me know if you can identify the challenge.
If the vertical black bars in the image didn’t make it clear to you that I was discussing ultrawide monitor support initially, then my comment about it in the caption likely helped clarify. In other words, the issue with Elden Ring Nightreign not supporting ultrawide monitors became evident.
In most FromSoftware games on PC, native support for ultrawide aspect ratios and resolutions is conspicuously absent, including the Dark Souls series, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring. The inclusion of this feature in 2023’s Armored Core 6 was a delightful surprise that fueled optimism for its inclusion in Elden Ring Nightreign when it was announced, but alas, we find ourselves back to the usual letdown in 2025, and I’m growing weary of it.
It strikes me that while many PC gamers don’t use ultrawide monitors, there are still quite a few of us who do. I can’t fathom why FromSoftware consistently imposes this limitation on players. The only explanation that crosses my mind is that perhaps the developer believes it provides an advantage to players, but additional peripheral vision would scarcely be beneficial in third-person action RPGs such as their games.

It’s possible that you might think the issue lies with Armored Core 6’s studio engine, but it’s important to note that Armored Core 6 includes ultrawide support and was developed using the same engine as Elden Ring (Nightreign). Interestingly, modders managed to create ultrawide modifications for Elden Ring just days following its release. However, these mods cannot be used online because they modify the game files in detectable ways, leading to a ban. This suggests that there may not be a significant technical hurdle preventing Armored Core 6 from supporting ultrawide resolutions.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel frustrated when pondering the apparent lack of ultrawide screen support in FromSoftware’s Soulsborne RPGs. It’s disheartening to yearn for a broader view of their stunningly crafted realms, especially after the promise shown by Armored Core 6. However, I find myself back at this crossroads once more, hoping against hope that an update might eventually bring ultrawide compatibility. Frankly, I wouldn’t hold my breath, but here’s to hoping for a change of heart from FromSoftware.
Elden Ring: Nightreign is a daring, innovative spin-off from FromSoftware that infuses the original game’s Soulsborne combat with a roguelike, cooperative twist. Despite its shortcomings such as having only one map or limited enemy variety, it promises to be one of this year’s top Xbox and PC games for fans eager for action. Priced at $39.99, but available for $33.99 at Newegg with the promo code XVSAVE.
