I Hate Fairyland: Skottie Young Homages Marvel's Oz With New Cover

As a long-time fan of Skottie Young’s work and someone who’s been following the twisted tale of Gert from I Hate Fairyland since its debut, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement upon seeing this latest development! The cover for I Hate Fairyland #17, with its clever nod to L. Frank Baum’s timeless classic, is not just a delightful homage but also a testament to the narrative similarities between these two fantastical journeys, albeit with the latter series taking a darker and more violent twist that has kept us hooked for years!

The highly-acclaimed comic book series, “I Hate Fairyland,” published by Image Comics, is about to reach a significant milestone. This week, Image Comics unveiled a new cover for issue #17 of “I Hate Fairyland,” set to hit comic book stores in November. The cover, drawn by Skottie Young, resembles his artwork from 2009’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” #1, the initial installment of his and Eric Shanower’s adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s timeless novel with the same title.

There’s an intriguing resemblance between the stories in “The Wizard of Oz” and “I Hate Fairyland,” with the latter having a darker, more violent tone. This cover design is particularly smart because of this connection. Moreover, it’s been hinted that the “Happy Ending” storyline in “I Hate Fairyland” #17 will feature characters from “The Wizard of Oz.” It should be fascinating to observe how this narrative unfolds and intertwines these two worlds.

He is doing it. @skottieyoung is going there, and it couldn’t be more beautiful.

What Is I Hate Fairyland About?

In “I Hate Fairyland,” we follow Gert, a six-year-old girl who’s been trapped in the enchanting realm of Fairyland for three decades. Determined to escape, she wields her weapons and fights through everything in her path to finally return home.

As a long-time comic book enthusiast, I can’t help but be overwhelmed by the reality of my book being published by Image Comics – a company whose early issues I used to eagerly purchase from the very same shelves! The memory of buying Spawn #1, WildC.A.T.S. #1, and Savage Dragon #1 still gives me a thrill. Now, it’s my turn to contribute to those iconic Image Comics #1’s that fans continue to snap up.

What Is I Hate Fairyland #17 About?

In Part Two of Five, “Happy End Game,” Happy guides an army of deceased Gerts from the underworld, passing through the Inferno and into Fairyland. As Gert seeks allies, the King calls forth a legend from Kansas known for combating malevolent forces like WICKED. Could this individual be associated with glittering footwear, yellow bricks, or any other clues? Let’s see if we can figure it out!

I Hate Fairyland #17 will be available wherever comics are sold on November 6th.
