On Windows 11, PowerToys is an exceptionally useful and adaptable application, consistently receiving updates with fresh features. However, there’s the potential for it to undergo a revamp in its appearance as well.
Niels Laute, a software developer responsible for PowerToys and WinUI, recently unveiled a work-in-progress idea. A picture posted by Laute showcases the PowerToys control panel adopting a design style reminiscent of Windows 11, rather than its current appearance.
That image appears in a conversation on the GitHub page for PowerToys.
As a tech-savvy individual, I’m thrilled about the revamped dashboard in Windows 11. It sports various recurring components that add consistency across the interface. What truly excites me is the improved navigation, making it a breeze to locate specific settings and configurations. Laute has enlightened us that this fresh design not only enhances the look but also streamlines user experience.
- A full list of modules with toggle switches to turn them on/off (each one deep links to its settings page).
- A central list of all shortcuts, so it’s easier to find and remember them.
- Quick-launch buttons for modules that can be launched directly, right at the top for easy access.
Over the past few years, PowerToys has significantly expanded its functionalities, making it somewhat complex to navigate due to its 28 different tools. Several of these tools necessitate individual settings or control areas.
In a recent discussion, Mauro Huculak pointed out three hidden gems within PowerToys for Windows 11, explaining that certain features may be tucked away or require exploring to find them.
“PowerToys has quietly become the Swiss Army knife of Windows 11,” said Huculak.
Although the most effective tools aren’t always immediately noticeable, there are a few hidden gems that not everyone may be aware of. For instance, while FancyZones, Color Picker, Peek, and PowerToys Run (which will soon be replaced by Command Palette) might be familiar to some users, there are other features within these tools that are less commonly used and can only be accessed when you know exactly where to search.
The revamped PowerToys dashboard will streamline the location of key features, making them more accessible, particularly for first-time users.
The idea appears intriguing, but it’s still quite new. It might take some time before noticeable adjustments occur in the PowerToys user interface.
