The film “Toy Story,” which initiated Pixar’s illustrious journey and revolutionized animated movie production, was not hesitant to acknowledge its significant cinematic influences. Scattered throughout the movie are direct references to adult films such as “Alien” and “The Shining,” as well as clear homages to Star Wars and Star Trek, particularly in the sci-fi influenced character of Buzz Lightyear. In fact, Buzz’s entire persona is modeled after the toy frenzy that arose alongside Star Wars.
It wasn’t until recently that I realized something interesting about Buzz Lightyear in the original Toy Story. His programming and mission bear a striking resemblance to characters from Star Wars. Despite watching the movie countless times over the past three decades, this connection never stood out to me before.
Before learning he was just a toy, Buzz Lightyear thought his task resembled what Princess Leia had in the first “Star Wars” film.
In the well-known scene from Toy Story beneath the gas station truck, when Woody and Buzz are having a disagreement, it’s during their iconic “YOU ARE A TOY” exchange. At this point, Buzz clarifies to his new adversary that he is engaged in a crucial mission, and the entire galaxy’s destiny is at stake.
Currently, positioned at the galaxy’s rim, Emperor Zurg has covertly constructed a weapon capable of obliterating an entire planet, Buzz reveals. I possess unique knowledge about this weapon’s vulnerable point. It falls upon you to hinder my meeting with Star Command!
If you sense a hint of déjà vu, it’s because this tale bears striking resemblance to that of Princess Leia in “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope”. In the distant reaches of the galaxy, the ominous figure of Darth Vader was clandestinely constructing the Death Star, an astronomical weapon with the destructive power to eradicate entire planets with a solitary blast. Leia, a pivotal figure in the Rebellion, came into possession of plans for this colossal vessel, which revealed its sole exterior vulnerability – a strategic weak point that could potentially allow the Rebels to outwit the Empire. However, her attempts to deliver these plans were thwarted, causing a delay in her rendezvous with other Rebel leaders. The narrative surrounding how she obtained those plans ultimately formed the basis of the storyline for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”.
In a fascinating twist, Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story goes a step beyond his usual antics. Instead of remaining under the truck, he stands tall and gazes upwards toward the heavens while discussing Emperor Zurg’s weapon. During this conversation, he even points his finger straight at the moon for an intriguing part of his soliloquy. A famous quote from Star Wars comes to mind during a similar scene when the Death Star is first seen, and its immense size leaves someone in awe, causing them to exclaim, “That’s not a moon.
The story behind Buzz Lightyear’s creation has been altered and expanded upon throughout the years, yet the original conception in 1995 was undeniably a tribute to the impact that Star Wars had on the production of Toy Story.
Back then, if I had watched Toy Story for the first time as an adult after seeing Star Wars, I would have immediately noticed the similarities. However, as a child who saw Toy Story when it came out 30 years ago, I already knew Toy Story’s lines by heart before ever watching a Star Wars movie. The dialogue from Toy Story was so familiar to me that it didn’t strike me as a reference to Star Wars until much later, when I realized just how closely Buzz Lightyear’s mission mirrored that of characters in Star Wars.
In another nod to the Star Wars saga, the character Sid, Andy’s mischievous neighbor who wreaks havoc on toys, enacts a scene reminiscent of Darth Vader’s interrogations in a later part of Toy Story. At one point, attempting to imitate Darth Vader’s voice, he barks menacingly, “Where are your allies now?” This line is undeniably a reference to the famous Star Wars question, “Where is your master now?
Are you aware that Toy Story contains nods to Star Wars, or is this a new discovery for you? In any case, it’s consistently intriguing to realize how one groundbreaking creation could have such a direct impact on another within the same field.
