I Kissed a Girl

The music world is mourning a sudden loss.

Jill Sobule, widely recognized as the artist behind the hit song “I Kissed a Girl” from 1995, passed away on May 1 due to a house fire in Minneapolis. She was 66 years old, and her passing was confirmed by her representative to Variety magazine.

As Jill Sobule’s dedicated follower and collaborator, I can attest that she was an unstoppable force in the realm of nature and a passionate advocate for human rights. Her music has become an integral part of our shared culture. Working with her was nothing short of enjoyable, but today, I find myself mourning both as a professional and personal acquaintance. May her music, spirit, and impact endure, inspiring future generations.

Originally set to perform at Swallow Hill Music’s Tuft Theatre on May 2 in her hometown of Denver, the singer will instead be commemorated with an informal gathering at the venue in her honor. A formal memorial service has been planned for later this summer, according to her representative, as reported by Variety.

1959 saw the birth of Sobule, and it wasn’t until 1990 that she released her first album titled “Things Here Are Different“. In 1995, her self-named second album emerged, which gained popularity and contained songs like “I Kissed a Girl”, one of the earliest hits in the queer music scene to chart on Billboard, as well as “Supermodel”, which was used in the movie “Clueless” that came out the same year.

Sobule’s tunes were also played in television shows like “The West Wing” and “Dawson’s Creek”, and later she sang the main theme for the Nickelodeon teen sitcom “Unfabulous”, which was Emma Robert’s first appearance on TV.

Through her songs with a focus on social awareness and an unusual stage presence, Sobule pondered over the recurring topics in her music mere days prior to her sudden passing.

In a conversation with Cincinnati Magazine, she expressed that she’s not accustomed to walking on eggshells. She found it intriguing and delightful to explore the boundaries of what one can say and still connect with those who hold different views from her.
