Few movie series are as skilled at maintaining secrets as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been over almost two decades. This secret-keeping trend persists in upcoming MCU films, and with stars of Thunderbolts* and numerous other MCU veterans gearing up for the production of Avengers: Doomsday, there’s a strong reason why they are all cautiously evaluating each other regarding the new film.
What Is The Thunderbolts* Cast Wondering About Their Roles In Avengers: Doomsday?
In March 2025, fans of Marvel’s multiverse-set movies and shows received exciting news: A livestream unveiled the cast list for Avengers: Doomsday. Many key characters from the upcoming Thunderbolts* film are set to reprise their roles in this first post-Infinity Saga Avengers movie, but according to actors David Harbour and Wyatt Russell, there’s still a lot they don’t know.
The pair recently had a conversation with GamesRadar, and when queried about whether they’ve filmed for “Doomsday” so far, the actor from Stranger Things answered:
We can’t even tell each other. We’re sussing each other out.
Wow, it’s quite remarkable how tight-lipped everyone is about the new Avengers film! It seems neither actor can confirm if they’ve already started filming, as they mustn’t reveal to each other whether they’ve actually begun working on the project yet. The Red Guardian actor elaborated further, addressing Russell.
If you had been in my situation, you might not have known exactly what would unfold, but I had a sense that something like this was coming. What I didn’t anticipate was anyone else being involved. I don’t have a pre-written narrative or script; there’s nothing formal like that.
It’s common knowledge that Marvel actors deal with a degree of secrecy that rivals real-life spies. For instance, Spider-Man’s actor, Tom Holland, and Hulk’s actor, Mark Ruffalo, have a reputation for revealing too much. More recently, Shang-Chi’s star, Simu Liu, joked that these two are responsible for the high level of Marvel secrecy. They often start filming without knowing who else will be in the movie until they either shoot with that actor or learn about it when the audience does. Not having the script or even the plotline is quite mind-boggling!
Wyatt Russell, who plays the character of U.S. Agent/John Walker in the series, mentioned that one of their current strategies for maintaining secrecy involves making frequent changes or switches in their operations. In his own words:
The situation seems to be in a constant state of flux, with numerous alterations. You never know what might happen next. It’s almost as if you receive a call saying, “The eagle is flying north tonight,” and suddenly, you find yourself rushing to catch a flight.
You realize, don’t you? Kudos to everyone involved in these films, from the cast and crew to the behind-the-scenes team, for maintaining secrecy so well that we, the audience, can be pleasantly surprised. It takes some real superheroes to handle the “What on earth is happening?” aspect of their work!
