I Know What You Did Last Summer Reboot Loses Riverdale Star Camila Mendes

As a gamer who’s been around the block a few times (or at least it feels like it with all these reboots and remakes), I must admit that I’m a bit bummed out about Camila Mendes dropping out of the upcoming “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” She was one of the reasons I was looking forward to this revival, given her captivating performance in Riverdale.

In Riverdale, Camila Mendes gained her breakout part, leading to such a packed schedule following the series’ end that she regrettably had to withdraw from the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer. The role was only recently confirmed for Mendes, but Deadline reports that it is her future involvement in the live-action Masters of the Universe that is causing this conflict, preventing her from appearing in the slasher remake. At the time of her casting in I Know What You Did Last Summer, no specifics about her character were disclosed, leaving unclear who might replace her. The new version of I Know What You Did Last Summer currently plans to debut on July 18, 2025

In addition to the lead actress, other notable actors joining the cast of the upcoming movie are Madelyn Cline from “Outer Banks”, Tyriq Withers from “Atlanta”, Jonah Hauer-King known for “The Little Mermaid”, and Sarah Pidgeon who was nominated for a Tony Award. The new adaptation of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is slated to be helmed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who co-wrote the script with Sam Lansky, with the storyline inspired from an original draft by Leah McKendrick. Neal Moritz, one of the original producers, will also produce this project

997’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is adapted from Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel of the same title. It revolves around a group of friends who, in an attempt to conceal a tragic accident (hitting someone with their car), choose not to inform the authorities. However, twelve months later, they are targeted by a menacing figure seeking retribution for the hidden crime

The initial live-action version of the Duncan book featured Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Ryan Phillippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar in its cast. The 1996 hit movie “Scream” opened the door for numerous teenage slasher films, with the Scream series itself being rebooted with two sequels released in 2022 and 2023. Fans speculate that I Know What You Did Last Summer might follow a similar pattern as Scream, potentially combining new characters alongside established figures

All three – Hewitt, Prinze, and “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” star Brandy Norwood – have hinted at a possible return to the show, yet an official announcement about any of them actually coming back hasn’t been made

The new I Know What You Did Last Summer currently has a release date of July 18, 2025.
