Man, I’ve got to admit, one major disappointment for me during this gaming generation was the scrapping of The Last of Us Online, or Factions as we fans often call it.
Before launching The Last of Us: Part 2, Naughty Dog revealed they were developing a separate game focusing on the multiplayer aspect that was previously found in The Last of Us.
Initially, it hinted at the project several times, labeling it as extremely ambitious and even displaying conceptual artwork. However, the unveiling online was postponed until 2023 when the developer opted to concentrate on single-player content instead.
In an interview with Sacred Symbols+ (subscription required), former PS Studios head, Shuhei Yoshida, shared his thoughts on playing the game, expressing that it was truly enjoyable.
He clarified that the concept for “The Last of Us Online” originated from Naughty Dog, but they were keen to bring it to life. However, Bungie shared with them the requirements for live service games, and Naughty Dog understood, “Oh dear, we don’t have the resources for that! If we proceed, we won’t be able to create Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.” In essence, they lacked the foresight.
Yoshida further mentioned that, as far as he’s aware, no initial studio has been compelled to develop live service games. He pointed out that occasionally, teams adapt their game ideas based on the direction they perceive the company is moving.
He pointed out, based on his observations, when studios notice that a company has a major project, it increases their odds of getting their own project accepted and backed. It’s not about the current head of PlayStation Studios, Hermen Hulst, compelling teams to develop live service games; rather, it’s more likely a mutual agreement.
Recently, Sony decided to scrap two ongoing live service initiatives from Bluepoint and Bend Studio, leaving their supporters disheartened. Many believe that these teams have invested a whole generational span into ventures that may forever remain unpublished.
Over the last four years, Yoshida has primarily worked on independent projects. Regarding the progress of these projects, he didn’t share many details, but in a nutshell, his sentiment was clear: “It’s been tough.
