What you need to know

  • It’s Monday and nobody has logged on yet, so I can post whatever I feel like.
  • Clippy is Microsoft’s notorious Office assistant from the 90s, who remains a cherished icon of a bygone age.
  • To celebrate Clippy’s legacy, Starfield player /u/lililiilillil from Reddit recreated the fun and cheeky Office tool as an interstellar space ship.
  • Using Starfield’s space ship crafter, you can create ships of all shapes and sizes, and go even further using mods on PC.
  • Starfield gets its first major story DLC drop today, dubbed Shattered Space.

As a child of the 90s and a lifelong Microsoft enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I think about Clippy. Back then, the quirky little paperclip was more than just an Office assistant – he was a symbol of a simpler, more playful era in tech.

Greetings to all gamers and Microsoft 365 enthusiasts! As it seems no one else has joined us just yet, I’m seizing this opportunity to share something amusing and imaginative to kickstart your week. Enjoy!

If you’re of a certain age (potentially with back pain), you may remember Clippy, Microsoft’s fun and friendly Office assistant of yore. Clippy would pop up over the top of Word and other application documents, offering tips and tricks, sometimes unwantedly so, while you were working. These days we have Microsoft Copilot and the promise of AI tools like Windows Recall popping up unwantedly on our Microsoft documents, and they’re certainly far less fun than Clippy was. Alas, Clippy is gone, consigned to the ancient past of Microsoft’s vast and expanding graveyard of products no longer with us.

If Clippy, that iconic software assistant, were able to transcend the digital realm and truly traverse the cosmos, as one imaginative Reddit user named /u/lililiilillil speculated.

Starfield, Bethesda Softworks’ newest game, is now under Microsoft’s ownership within their Xbox gaming branch. Renowned for blockbusters such as Fallout 3, 4, and The Elder Scrolls series, this latest release transports players to an expansive playground encompassing numerous planets across a vast galaxy.

In this game, players construct their vessels for exploration, either utilizing a pre-existing model or crafting their own. These ships are built from interlocking components, much like Lego blocks, but they do have certain limitations. For instance, larger ships demand more power to overcome planetary gravity and long-distance space travel necessitates greater fuel storage capacity. By employing Starfield mods on a PC, you can bypass some of the constraints, leading to the creation of impressive vessels, such as the famous Clippy ship from Reddit.

As a researcher, I am excitedly anticipating the launch of Bethesda’s first story DLC expansion for Starfield on September 30, 2024 – that is, today! In stark contrast to the initial release of the game, which faced criticism over its excessive use of procedurally-generated planets, Shattered Space offers a unique, handcrafted experience. This expansion leans heavily into horror themes, immersing players in a crisis within a space cult. Whether one chooses to aid or hinder this cult, the experience promises an engaging and suspenseful journey.

I long for Clippy, but this will do

In a modern context, Clippy has turned into a popular meme, especially among users of a certain age group like us. However, I find myself nostalgic about its influence. Clippy symbolizes a more playful and less business-oriented era for Microsoft. Although Microsoft Copilot, with its ChatGPT backend, is undeniably more practical, Clippy or even Cortana were simply more entertaining. Strangely enough, people might not necessarily want their work tools to be enjoyable, but Microsoft seems to think otherwise, as evident in the inclusion of games in Microsoft Teams and LinkedIn.

In various tributes and Microsoft’s recent Windows 11 emojis (like the 📎), Clippy continues to live on. It’s hard not to feel that if Microsoft’s AI assistant, Copilot, or even Bing itself had a touch of Clippy’s charm, they might be more warmly welcomed. Perhaps I’m merely clinging to nostalgia, but it seems worth considering. What are your thoughts?

Either way, have an awesome week, Windows Central friends.
