I think Marathon looks fun, but is Bungie hiding the game’s best feature?

After a series of ARG mysteries deciphered by fans, developer Bungie has unveiled an extensive preview of their upcoming multiplayer title, Marathon. Originally teased in Spring 2023, this PvP-centric shooter remake is now confirmed for launch this year on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PS5, with a scheduled release date of September 23. Marking the studio’s first new game since Destiny 2 was launched in 2017.

Over the weekend, Bungie unveiled extended gameplay previews, detailed walkthroughs, and an hour-long showcase for Marathon, sparking quite a buzz among gaming enthusiasts. The general consensus appears to be a blend of opinions – while the impressive production quality is hard to ignore, some players argue that the demonstrations lacked unique characteristics or gameplay mechanics that would differentiate it from other games in its genre.

In essence, I understand why some folks might have their reservations about Marathon, but I must admit that I find its distinctive blend of glitchy, futuristic, and somewhat punk-inspired design quite appealing, with its utilitarian architecture and vivid color palette. The core gameplay mechanics, including the gunplay and movement, appear to be both swift and satisfying, thanks to their snappy response times, punchy sound effects, and high-quality animations (although some elements do seem reminiscent of Destiny). All things considered, the sneak peek Bungie provided makes Marathon appear as an entertaining shooter, even if it hasn’t quite managed to set itself apart as a truly unique one.

Interestingly, content creators who had been secretly invited for Marathon playtesting in recent months were also granted permission to express their opinions publicly over the weekend. A feature that several of them (specifically YouTuber Skarrow9) mentioned has left me questioning why the developers didn’t highlight it during their reveals.

As reported, the game features a Marathon colony ship map, among others, that includes player-versus-environment (PvE) puzzles and hidden mechanics. While other maps offer less of these elements, the Marathon one stands out. Essentially, it appears that Bungie is incorporating aspects reminiscent of Destiny’s popular raids and dungeons to enhance the competitive player-versus-player (PvP) encounter with intriguing challenges.

In a recent video, Skarrow9 expressed his anticipation for the Marathon ship map, saying it’s likely to be thrilling. While he refrained from labeling it as raid-like in terms of Destiny, he did note that it involves puzzle-solving and secret-uncovering, all while engaging in Player versus Player (PvP) combat. He emphasized that this blend of exploration and conflict will make the game stand out. Above all, Skarrow9 can’t wait to return to the ship, unravel its secrets, and battle its enemies.

In the heat of intense multiplayer battles, the use of pseudo-raid mechanics adds a unique and exhilarating touch, a feature that could draw in FPS players who are spoiled for choice. Yet, Bungie’s reluctance to discuss this aspect only heightens curiosity.

It’s possible that the developer didn’t feel prepared to display these PvPvE interactions yet, but regardless of their polish level, I think it’s crucial for attention to be given to them. The game “Marathon,” classified as a “premium title” although not a “full-priced” one, is expected to retail around $40. It will include a battle pass and, in my opinion, probably a microtransactions shop too. This pricing strategy, when most PvP games are free-to-play, is challenging. If Bungie wants players to pay upfront to overcome that initial cost barrier, they need to make an impression; the closed Concord, permanently shut down in October, serves as a stark reminder of what can occur if this isn’t done effectively.

Displaying raid-like gameplay mechanics could be an effective method for increasing the visibility of Marathon’s iconic aliens. In the time leading up to the game’s launch in September, I eagerly anticipate that this will occur. Let’s wait and find out!
