I Tried an Idle Game for the First Time and It Changed My Gaming Life Forever!

As the first Steam Next Fest of the year approaches and there’s a gap in major game launches until March, I, much like others, started browsing through Steam’s most-played demos to find something interesting. Among the top Steam demos were mech games, RPGs, simulators, well-known titles such as Game of Thrones, and more. However, one game on that list piqued my curiosity: Bongo Cat. After investing over 80 hours into Bongo Cat, I’ve decided to buy it on the day of its release, March 5th, when it comes out on Steam, regardless of the price.

Before playing Bongo Cat, I hadn’t given much thought to idle games – in fact, I could even say I was not particularly fond of them. However, after spending time with Bongo Cat, my perspective has changed and I now understand the appeal.

The game is modeled after the popular Bongo Cat meme and features a cat friend that stays on your screen as you work, play, or perform other tasks. When you click the mouse or press keys on the keyboard, his paws appear to hit the taskbar with each action (provided you’ve positioned him there). The game doesn’t have a traditional window, so without his animated movements in the corner of my vision while I work, I might forget he’s present.

While you’re busy typing and clicking around, the furry friend known as Bongo Cat synchronizes with the total number of actions you take. If you prefer a more subtle experience, you can conceal this count by simply hovering your cursor over him. The charming presence of Bongo Cat adds a comforting touch, but it’s the game’s drops that truly make it stand out.

In approximately 30 minutes, if you click or press at least 1,000 times, you’ll receive a drop. By the time I finish promoting Bongo Cat, I’d have inputted around 170,000 times, earning various types of items for Bongo Cat to wear on his head, as well as skins that alter his base appearance. There are numerous items such as mohawks, wizard and witch hats, party hats, bows, lanterns, stacks of books, gummy bears, Viking helmets, and many more rewards yet to be mentioned waiting for you. This also includes a rudimentary economy: once you have collected 10 items of the same rarity, you can trade up to the next level, eventually obtaining a coveted Legendary item.

Bongo Cat is simple yet engaging, making it worth recommending to anyone who uses a computer and has Steam installed. This feline companion keeps me company while I work, and even when I move on to more demanding games like League of Legends that require intense interaction, he’s still there. For the first time, I’ve pinned a game to my taskbar and set it to launch at startup – all thanks to Bongo Cat and a newfound appreciation for idle games.

As a dedicated fan, I must say that the Bongo Cat Discord community is truly a delightful space filled with creative minds sharing their ideas about the game’s future. However, I sincerely hope that the game maintains its current simplicity. Marvelous news, the developer, Marcel Zurawka from Irox Games, has confirmed that the full release will incorporate trading and selling features! Excitingly, players who participate in the demo now will receive a “Gamer” hat upon the game’s official launch on March 5th. Among my favorite drops, this special Gamer hat, along with some other favorites, will hold an untradeable status as I continue to collect more rewards.

On March 5th, “Bongo Cat” is scheduled for release on Steam, yet a demo is currently available to check if the complete version suits your schedule next week. If you’re seeking an additional idle game afterwards, there’s one that has been steadily rising in popularity on Steam recently.
