I wanted to love this Deadpool mobile controller, but it couldn’t replace my go-to

Previously, one of the most noteworthy releases was the collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine, and Xbox unveiled a controversial giveaway alongside its Deadpool-themed controller shaped like a butt.

Regrettably, it couldn’t be purchased, and we voiced our frustration to Xbox. However, GameSir has incorporated the Deadpool design into one of their mobile controllers designed for cloud gaming on Xbox. There isn’t a real butt, I’m afraid, but there is an attractive red and black leather finish and a fan to keep your phone cool.

Let’s explore the Deadpool Edition of the GameSir X3 Pro.

GameSir X3 Pro Deadpool review: Pricing and specifications

The GameSir X3 Pro Deadpool Edition is only found on GameSir’s official website at a price of $99.99. Unlike some other GameSir controllers, it isn’t sold anywhere else yet. If you don’t mind, you can choose the standard X3 Pro, which is available on Amazon for $79.99 instead.

In this exclusive version, you’ll find a personalized Deadpool case for your controller, crafted just for this purpose. Additionally, you’ll get alternative joysticks of different heights and a swappable D-pad, allowing for a bit of personal tailoring.

GameSir X3 Pro Deadpool review: The good

  • The presentation and packaging of the controller is a step up from GameSir’s normal fare.
  • The sticks are Hall Effect, so durable, and micro-switch buttons are great.

The presentation and design of the GameSir X3 Pro Deadpool Edition is a notable improvement compared to standard GameSir products, catering specifically to Marvel collectors with its stylish and detailed aesthetics. Upon opening the box, it’s evident that care has been taken in every aspect.

The Deadpool-themed carry case is a striking feature, offering protection for the controller but being custom-made for the X3 Pro, which means it can only be used for this specific device. Although I was initially disappointed by its limited use, the case’s Deadpool-inspired design and vibrant color scheme more than compensate for this restriction.

Customization is one of the controller’s strengths, as it comes with swappable ABXY face buttons allowing you to switch to a Nintendo-style layout if desired. Additionally, alternate sticks of varying heights and an interchangeable D-pad are included in the package, eliminating the need for additional purchases right out of the box.

Despite being on the larger side, the controller can have its leather grips removed to accommodate smaller hands. The grips, which resemble Deadpool’s leather attire, are a fun touch and can be easily detached if you prefer a more streamlined design.

Regarding its performance, GameSir has outfitted the X3 Pro with Hall Effect joysticks for enhanced durability and to avoid stick drift, a recurring problem seen in analog sticks from well-known brands like Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo. The inclusion of micro-switch buttons is also noteworthy, as they offer a more responsive and precise feel compared to membrane buttons.

For users of Xbox Cloud Gaming, Nvidia GeForce Now, or comparable streaming platforms, this controller significantly simplifies and enhances the mobile gaming experience compared to navigating through touchscreens.

GameSir X3 Pro Deadpool review: The bad

  • It doesn’t fit larger phones very well, which is at odds with something for gaming.

One aspect of the GameSir X3 Pro that falls short is its integrated cooling fan. Although the cooling function can aid in keeping your phone slightly cooler during lengthy gaming periods, which could extend the device’s lifespan, its implementation leaves much to be desired. The fan is incredibly loud, almost as if you’re playing games next to a hairdryer, making it quite an annoying experience.

Even with the choice to toggle between speedy and quiet cooling modes, both options are excessively noisy. In fact, I often found myself turning it off completely due to the noise level.

To add insult to injury, this fan needs a separate power source. It doesn’t tap into your phone’s power, so you’ll either need to connect it to another device or carry a portable charger around. This setup seems contradictory for a mobile gaming device intended for on-the-go entertainment.

One concern that arises is the compatibility of the controller with larger smartphones, particularly the Samsung S23 Ultra. Although GameSir controllers are generally well-constructed and ergonomic, I found that the X3 Pro had difficulty retaining the device during testing. At first sight, the phone appears to fit nicely, but it fails to maintain a stable position.

During gameplay, the grips would slip, and the phone would often slide out of place. This issue seems to be caused by the bulky nature of the grips, which disturbs the balance of weight distribution.

This review significantly differs from my previous experiences with other GameSir mobile controllers, especially the one I prefer most, the GameSir G8. The G8, with its streamlined design and well-balanced weight, makes it far more comfortable for prolonged gaming sessions, even with larger smartphones.

However, the X3 Pro fails to match the same user-friendly qualities, which is disheartening considering its premium price tag.

Among my top recommendations for mobile controllers is the GameSir G8 or its Bluetooth variant, the GameSir G8+. Both are available for around $80 on Amazon. You should buy this if …

✅You want a visually striking mobile controller and are a huge Deadpool fan

The GameSir X3 Pro is stunning and is modelled after Deadpools suit, and comes with a carry case.

✅You want a mobile controller that cools your device

The fan on the rear is effective at cooling your phone, if you aren’t bothered by the noise.

You should not buy this if …

❌You have a large phone

If your phone screen measures more than 6 inches, similar to the Samsung Ultra series, it may extend beyond this.

❌You don’t care about the fan

There are much better mobile controllers in GameSir’s range without the fuss of a fan

In summary, although I’ve consistently appreciated GameSir’s commitment to creating affordable, innovative controllers, the X3 Pro Deadpool Edition didn’t meet my expectations. It might appeal strongly to dedicated Deadpool enthusiasts and Marvel collectors due to its distinctive theme, but for everyday use with Xbox Cloud Gaming, it lacks in performance. For practical purposes, I prefer GameSir’s more straightforward controllers, which consistently offer comfort and dependability without excessive frills.
