The most recent Call of Duty I thoroughly enjoyed was Modern Warfare (2019) remake, which I played in 2019, and over the following years, I found myself replaying it frequently despite new releases. However, Activision and Treyarch have managed to convince me with their latest offering – Black Ops 6. While it’s been a blast to play and represents an exciting leap for the series, there were some minor flaws initially.
On my Xbox Series X, I engage in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 using a controller, and I discovered that the default controller settings could use some fine-tuning. Through some tinkering (and incorporating advice from various online sources), I settled on these four adjustments to enhance my gameplay. While I may never reach pro status, these changes have certainly helped me make the most of Black Ops 6’s innovative Omnimovement system.
Simple tweaks for more responsive and intuitive controls
I’ll get straight to the point. I’ve listed five adjustments I made in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 to enhance the gameplay experience when using a controller. Although the last change isn’t exclusive to controllers, it’s still beneficial!
One suggestion for paraphrasing the given text could be: For beginners, I’d suggest modifying the initial setting you find most useful. To do this in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, navigate to the “Controller” tab within settings and customize your button layout. I strongly suggest modifying the second setup. In Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, they introduced the Omnimovement system, allowing you to dash, glide, and roll in any direction. This has significantly altered the movement dynamics, making players more flexible and swift than ever. However, both sliding and diving only work when you’re sprinting, and repeatedly clicking the left thumbstick can become tiresome and lead to hesitation at times.
In the “Movements” section of Call of Duty’s settings, you’ll find the “Sprint Assist” option, which is designed to help individuals with mobility issues move more easily by allowing them to sprint without continually pressing the thumbstick. By adjusting the “Sprint Assist Delay” to 0 and ensuring it’s enabled for all directions, you will continuously sprint when your left thumbstick reaches its maximum in any direction. This means you can slide and dive instantly with no delays.
Making this slight adjustment brings about a noticeable enhancement, and you can still use the left joystick to trigger the tactical sprint for extra speed in Black Ops 6. This tweak significantly boosts the game’s character movement agility.
In the “Advanced Aiming” options within Black Ops 6, you’ll come across an area where you can adjust the type of controller aim assist response curve. Essentially, this setting affects the speed and smoothness of your camera movement based on the position of your thumbstick on the controller. For instance, the “Standard” option is designed to help mitigate overly aggressive movements by initially slowing down excessive thumbstick movement, then gradually picking up speed over time.
The “Linear” type is likely used by pros a lot, as it maps the camera movement directly to the analog sticks with no deviation. This is ideal for those who have fine-tuned their sensitivity settings, but it also has the longest learning curve to master on the controller, as thumbsticks are famously awful for precise aiming. For me, the “Dynamic” type is the best.
The shape of this control profile follows an S-curve: At the start, swift thumbstick movement is amplified for swift reactions, yet it ensures smooth and precise aiming during extended movements. This way, you can swivel faster than your usual sensitivity settings suggest, reacting to fresh threats more quickly. However, fine-tuning your aim will still be gradual, mimicking lower sensitivity.
With the “Dynamic” setting, there’s a learning process similar to the “Standard,” but if you’re already comfortable with the latter, it doesn’t take long to notice an increase in victories during firefights where I didn’t initially have the advantage. In other words, I’ve been awarded more “Turned On” medals since switching to this setting.
In contrast to many other games, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 comes equipped with default deadzones for both thumbsticks and triggers. This implies that the game sets a specific range or “dead” zone for movement, aiming, and shooting controls. Only when your thumbstick or trigger inputs fall within this predefined range will they be recognized in the game. For instance, a large minimum deadzone necessitates more control movement to be registered, whereas a smaller maximum deadzone allows for a high level of input with minimal movement.
If your controller experiences the annoying issue of stick drift, adjusting deadzones can help eliminate this unwanted motion, ensuring that only inputs outside of where your thumbstick naturally drifts are recognized. However, if your controller doesn’t exhibit stick drift, it might be unnecessary to use deadzones at all. In Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the non-deadzones for both movement and aiming are set by default to a range of 10-99, and even the triggers have a deadzone, causing a slight delay in shooting and aiming down sights.
Here’s a suggestion for enhancing control responsiveness: Consider minimizing the deadzones on your controls as much as feasible for the smoothest gameplay experience. Should your controls become overly sensitive or you start experiencing unwanted inputs, feel free to increase the deadzones again until you find the perfect balance. For the swiftest movement possible at all times, you might also lower the maximum deadzone on your left thumbstick, thereby reducing the amount of thumbstick input needed for maximum movement.
In the “View” settings of Call of Duty, you’ll discover an option to modify your Field of View (FOV). This determines how much you can see on the screen at one time. A larger FOV resembles a wide-screen monitor (and may cause a “fisheye lens” effect on standard screens), while a smaller FOV feels like peering through a keyhole.
By standard, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 initially sets the Field-of-View (FOV) to 90 degrees, but it allows adjustment. While some players might propose cranking it up to the maximum, I advise against that. An expanded FOV may cause performance problems and visual artifacts or texture glitches, among other issues. However, it’s worth noting that you can and it’s advisable to slightly increase the FOV from its default setting. But be cautious not to overdo it to avoid distorting the game’s visuals if you’re not using a widescreen monitor.
Increasing the field of view (FOV) enables you to spot enemy movements at the screen periphery more swiftly, making your responses quicker. For me, setting the FOV to 100 degrees significantly enhanced my gameplay without causing any performance problems or glitches. However, it’s all about personal comfort regarding what works best for your gaming style.

Although a mouse offers swifter and more accurate aiming than any controller could, given my extensive experience with Counter-Strike 2 and Valorant, an Xbox controller remains my preferred choice for input when I’m engaged in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. This game, one of the best CoD titles in years as far as I’m concerned, has prompted me to invest additional time tweaking my controls to match my playstyle and ability level.
