Meghan Markle is providing some perspective.
Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, prefers for people to recall that her life wasn’t always as idyllic as it may appear. In an interview with The New York Times published on April 2, when asked about allegations that she is inaccessible, she pointed to her Montecito residence and remarked, “Isn’t it clear that my life hasn’t always been like this?
The contention that the ex-actress from Suits, who is mother to 5-year-old Archie and 3-year-old Lilibet with husband Prince Harry (aged 40), was perceived as being disconnected, arose primarily due to her latest Netflix show, With Love, Meghan. This series features her demonstrating various skills such as cooking, crafting, and hosting.
As an ardent admirer, I found myself utterly bewildered when Julia Moskin, the esteemed reporter from The Times, brought to my attention the uproar caused by some spectators claiming the Le Creuset cookware I showcased was beyond their budget. In 2025? I couldn’t help but wonder, is affordability really a concern in this day and age?
Meghan then turned to her mom Doria Ragland, who said, “Everyone is coming in hot these days.”
Regarding the reason behind her decision to do the show, it was picked up for a second season just three days after its premiere. The 43-year-old noted that she had been working since she was 13 years old until her encounter with Harry in 2016, following which she largely retired from acting and closed down her lifestyle blog, The Tig.
Meghan clarified, “I have to work, but I enjoy it, and that’s how I blend my personal life with my professional one.
The mother of two has freely discussed some obstacles she encountered during the establishment of As Ever, a venture that was initially known as American Riviera Orchard.
Meghan stated in an interview with People, published on March 3rd, that there were many unexpected twists and turns, even regarding the name, and she was discovering things as they happened.
She went on to express her gratitude towards those who allowed her room for errors and learning experiences. Additionally, she acknowledged the importance of being understanding and compassionate with herself during this process. Essentially, she’s saying it’s all part of the journey of growth.
Indeed, I’ve been finding myself more open and transparent lately. Beyond my Netflix series and personal lifestyle brand, I’ve also resurrected my personal Instagram account and introduced a new one for “As Ever”.
Previously, Meghan mused, “The American Riviera – what a charming name!” as she introduced As Ever on the company’s Instagram page on February 17. She explained, “This place is where I live, often referred to as the American Riviera, but the label constrained me to only products produced or cultivated within this region.
She went on to say that ‘As Ever’ translates to ‘as it has been all along,’ and for those who have been following her since 2014 through ‘The Tig’, you would recognize that she has always had a passion for cooking, crafting, and gardening – this is her lifestyle.

Meghan Markle, who is well-known to be fond of jams, shared that her interest in preserving grew significantly after she and Prince Harry settled into their home in Montecito, California. She mentioned this while picking berries during the second episode of “With Love, Meghan.” The vines were already present when they moved in, which sparked her passion for making jams and preserves. Regarding her preferred preserve, it remains undisclosed.
As a devoted admirer, let me share a personal sentiment: Just like my grandmother used to, I make apple butter, and I cherish this tradition because it’s deeply rooted in nostalgia for me. Interestingly, my children, Archie and Lilibet, now get to experience this tradition firsthand. For them, the sweet aroma of slow-cooked fruit will evoke memories of coming home from school and finding the house filled with this delightful scent. They’ll likely recognize it as ‘Mom is making preserves again.’
Intriguingly, Lilibet has already dabbled in preserve-making herself! During episode five, I revealed that we made a batch of strawberry preserve together. She was the one who picked all those berries with me, and then she eagerly took over, exclaiming, ‘No no, mama. I’ll do it.’ She wanted to try her hand at stirring and mashing the fruit. With safety precautions in place, she gave it a go. And as a mother, there’s something incredibly fulfilling about seeing my child take pride in their accomplishments.
It turns out that Harry, who occasionally appears on the show, seems to have some hidden talents in the kitchen too. As Megan shared in episode five, he’s quite skilled at cooking breakfast and even adds salt to his food before tasting it. In fact, Megan mentioned in the second episode that she tries to use less salt because Harry tends to season his food generously.
In terms of her fashion sense, Meghan mentioned that she favors a style known as “high-low,” which entails combining high-end with more affordable items. During the second episode where she hosted Mindy Kaling for a tea party, she explained her attire, revealing she wore pants from Zara, a top from Loro Piana, and a sweater by Jenni Kayne.
The series highlights Meghan’s passion for hosting, cooking, gardening, and decorating, but it also reveals some lesser-known interests of hers. For example, in one episode, she organizes a game night with her friends where they all learn to play mahjong together. “We’ve picked up mahjong over the past few months,” she said. “Mahjong originated in China in the 1800s, and we play an American version of it. What I find so wonderful about mahjong is not just the game itself, but the experience of learning something new with friends, which ultimately leads to the deepening of friendships.”
In another episode, her friend, Vicky Tsai, founder of Tatcha, mentioned that Meghan also enjoys playing pickleball. Moreover, Meghan herself shared some of her favorite music genres.
Meghan mentioned in episode five that she’s fond of a great deal of ’70s soft rock, yacht rock, and Soul music, along with some French tunes reminiscent of dinner parties.
As for her culinary preferences, she confessed to having an exceptionally high tolerance for spicy foods.
From a young age, our resources were limited, yet we had the privilege of traveling extensively. My mother was a travel agent, so she would take us on adventures where we could sample various cuisines and cultures. One dish that particularly stands out is gumbo – a soul food with an abundance of flavor and spice. I find myself constantly drawn to such bold flavors, and I’m now introducing these tastes to my loved ones. It’s a tradition I cherish.
In episode two, Meghan reminisced about her childhood, stating, “It seems like another world now, but back then, it was completely normal for me to consume a lot of fast food and TV tray dinners. Those were staples of my diet, along with spending evenings watching Jeopardy!.”
Her favorite fast-food picks?
“I was a big fan of Pollo Loco and Taco Bell, particularly their Mexican pizzas with extra hot sauce,” Meghan shared, “and I couldn’t forget Jack in the Box because my mom loved their tacos.
But, there were more memories than just those she recounted from her childhood. Meghan also talked about her experiences with the Girl Scouts as well.
In the fourth episode, she mentioned that she had been a Girl Scout for quite some time. She joined at the age of 5 or 6 as a Daisy, and her mother served as the troop leader for Troop 949, and she sold an impressive number of cookies during her scouting years.
Following their departure from active service in the royal family in 2020, Harry and Meghan retained their titles as Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
In her book, With Love, Meghan, she shared why the Sussex title holds great significance for her.
“It’s quite amusing that you keep referring to me as Meghan Markle,” Meghan said to Mindy in episode two. “Remember, I’m Sussex now. Just like parents who share their name with their children, I didn’t realize how meaningful it would be to me, but saying ‘This is our family name’ fills me with such pride.
Discussing Archie and Lili, Meghan provided some interesting tidbits about their lifestyle during the series. She disclosed that her kids, particularly Lili, share her passion for gardening and even have their own gardening tools. Lili, in fact, has turned the clean-as-you-go principle into a catchy song.
In the fifth episode, Meghan shared how she makes sun tea with Archie and recounted an instance where he caught a trout while fishing. Cooking with her children is also something she cherishes, as she expressed in the same episode.
“Clean as you go. Lili has even made a song out of it,” Meghan explained. “‘Clean as you go. Clean, clean, clean, clean, clean as you go.'”
Moreover, she spoke about the joy and memories she wants her children to have by participating in activities like cooking together. “It’s such an integral part of what I want them to learn,” Meghan said in episode five. “‘Oh mama used to make this.’
Before becoming an actress and a duchess, Meghan’s earliest work experience was at an ice cream shop named Humphrey Yogart, which she recounted in episode five of ‘With Love, Meghan’. Later on, she also worked at a doughnut shop called Lil Orbits Donuts, making miniature doughnuts. During her college years, Meghan held jobs as a coat-check girl and later a cocktail waitress at a bar in Chicago. However, due to some confusion with a customer’s martini order, she was asked to revert back to being a coat-check girl. Additionally, while starting her acting career, Meghan also conducted gift-wrapping classes.
In episode four, as Meghan hosts an event with Nacho Figueras’ wife, Delfina Blaquier, she muses about her time spent abroad. She explains that during her stay in Argentina, she felt a strong connection to California due to similarities such as the presence of mountains and the vibrant joy of life. Even though her stay was brief, just a few months working at the U.S. embassy, she found herself falling in love with the country.
From 2011 to 2018, Meghan portrayed Rachel Zane on the show Suits. The moment she discovered she was relocating to Toronto for that role remains etched in her memory.
In episode two, she commented, “It seems it will be filmed here. It’s located in Toronto. Alright, what does that mean?” Later on, she said, “Alright, so a season in Toronto. Fantastic. Two seasons? Well, is my life about to change to another location now? Fortunately, I have a soft spot for Canada and have always tried to bring the cast over or meet people from the dog park with their dogs.” Interestingly, her co-star Abigail Spencer features in one of the episodes of “With Love, Meghan”.
In January, it was shared that Meghan’s cherished dog, Guy, had sadly passed away. This lovable beagle graced screens in several episodes of the Netflix series, and Meghan often spoke about her deep affection for him. She once said, “I would do anything for Guy, and he knows it. He can have whatever he wants because he is whatever kind of guy you need him to be depending on the day—my sweet guy, my silly guy, my saucy little guy, always my spoiled guy.” Indeed, he was a constant companion by her side. “Guy’s just always there,” she added in another episode. “He’s my shadow, and he’s been with me for a very long time. Guy’s been with me since I lived in Toronto. He was found in the woods in Kentucky, and he’s since moved with me to the U.K., back to Canada, to California. So yeah, Guy has a lot of stories to tell.” After the final episode, Meghan dedicated it to the memory of her beloved pet, Guy.
