As a devoted fan who has witnessed every glittering step of Strictly Come Dancing’s 20-year journey, I can confidently say that this show is a timeless treasure that continues to captivate audiences with its irresistible charm. The improvements in the standard of dancing over the years are undeniable, but let me tell you, some of the performances from the early days were nothing short of magical – Jill Halfpenny’s jive in series two, Darren Gough’s mesmerizing tango in series three, and Mark Ramprakash’s charismatic cha-cha in series four still hold a special place in my heart.

You’ve been part of Strictly since the start. How has the show changed over the past 20 years?
As a film enthusiast, I’ve always admired how Strictly Come Dancing has evolved over the years. Jill Halfpenny truly shone in series two with her unparalleled jive performance. Darren Gough was captivating in series three, and Mark Ramprakash equally so in series four. However, what makes it even more awe-inspiring now is the introduction of complex moves like the American Smooth and the Charleston – dances we never dreamt of seeing on this show before!
Did you ever imagine that the show would run for 20 years? What’s the secret of its longevity?
We never even considered it, but I thought it was a genius idea putting a celebrity with a professional. You can enjoy it for so many different reasons, whether it’s the live music, the judges, the dancing, the frocks. The nuts and bolts haven’t changed, but it’s become more impressive-looking every time.
What would it take for you to leave?
I’ll join you in a little over ten years, rest assured. It seems it has legs for miles. The audience adores the series just as much today as they did before, despite the unfavorable media attention of late. Frankly, the press fails to grasp that viewers aren’t interested in the negative aspects. They prefer us to move past it, thank you very much. We’re all smitten with this show.
Do you watch it yourself?
In our household, it’s quite significant. My wife and kids are fond of it, so I occasionally join them and ensure I don’t act foolishly or irrationally.
Do you ever change your mind on your scores when you watch it back?
The scenes captured in the studio aren’t the same as those you witness at home. You view things from the front, which is where cameras are placed, while we observe from the side. Occasionally, I might remark, “I didn’t catch that, they were slightly off-sync.” However, I assess what I see and have yet to make a mistake in my judgments.
Has the judging changed over the years?
Back in the day, things were tougher. Craig wouldn’t have gotten away with his ruthlessness like he does now. Let me tell you, he was a real monster! I took the brunt of it. Now, if someone makes a mistake and has the potential to improve, it’s only fair to give them constructive criticism. But if my partners weren’t destined for greatness, I didn’t see the point in the judges relentlessly criticizing us. It was demoralizing and counterproductive.
Did Craig’s comments ever upset you?
He spoke some rather unkind words towards me and Ann Widdecombe. In response, Ann quipped, “If you found that unpleasant, just wait until next week when we’ll be performing the Samba.” It was simply amazing.
Is it challenging for a professional to strike the right balance between motivating and challenging the competitors?
My approach has always been to try something different if it’s not successful. If emotions ran high, we’d step aside for a moment and share a cup of tea to cool things down. I never wanted my dance partner to feel regretful about our partnership. I consider myself lucky as I enjoyed every moment with all my partners.
Do you miss being a pro?
I feel a pang of longing whenever I witness an exquisite dance that I yearn to perform myself. Yet, there are some dances I could do without experiencing, and that’s what gives me pause, thinking I’m content with my current situation!
Will you be watching the Christmas special?
I’m quite conventional, and we typically celebrate Christmas with dinner followed by watching “Strictly”. It turns out that this particular version of the show is my hidden favorite. In the past, I would plead with them to let me participate. One year, I was still competing, so I couldn’t perform in the Christmas special too, but they granted me the opportunity to dance to Michael Bublé.
Who would you like to see on the Christmas special?
Mike and Zara Tindall. I know them both well and they’d be great sports.
