As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for character-driven dramas and British television, I can confidently say that Slow Horses should be on everyone’s watchlist. The series offers a compelling portrayal of flawed characters navigating the complexities of intelligence work, and Joanna Scanlan’s performance as Moira Tregorian is nothing short of remarkable.
Add Slow Horses to your watchlist
At Slough House, it’s where MI5 houses its mistakes. If you get assigned there, you might start doubting your own skills. But not Moira Tregorian, portrayed by Joanna Scanlan. Instead of The Park headquarters, she was sent to the Barbican branch of British intelligence to replace Catherine Standish as Jackson Lamb’s assistant. With an unyielding self-assurance, Tregorian walks in and even cleans up his messy office – a transgression that Lamb can never forget.
“Scanlan observes that Lamb’s rude behavior is akin to a straightforward form of egalitarian contempt for humanity, isn’t it?” or “Scanlan notes that Lamb’s rudeness seems like an honest, unconcealed dislike and disdain for people. It appears as though he represents the raw feelings that many of us share, but we typically hide them under a polite veneer.”
There are no limits to people’s gross private habits
Lamb’s behaviour around Tregorian is appalling but somehow he always gets away with it. Can Scanlan imagine a woman being so rude and repellent “Oh, yes! I can easily see a character I play farting and smelling bad. There are no limits to people’s gross private habits, and everybody knows that, deep down.”
Among television personalities, Scanlan stands out, having been part of shows such as BBC’s “The Thick of It” and ITV’s “The Larkins”. Despite winning a Bafta for her leading role in the 2020 film “After Love”, she acknowledges that collaborating with Oldman is a significant milestone. “I must confess, I’m deeply respectful of Gary Oldman as an actor,” she shares. “However, Moira is so oblivious to other people’s emotions and demands that it seemed like a protective barrier for her to engage in a confrontation with him. In playing Moira, I was able to channel my own feelings of reverence towards being in Gary’s presence into Moira’s dismissive attitude towards everything happening at Slough House.”
Scanlan had been alerted about the series as she had collaborated with showrunner Will Smith on “The Thick of It” previously. On the night that “Slow Horses” premiered on Apple TV+, her husband and she watched it out of loyalty to a friend, and they were both astounded from the very beginning. Since then, we’ve become avid fans. I couldn’t believe that I was given the opportunity to join that world. It felt like I was being let in on a secret, and I didn’t want to know the behind-the-scenes details because I was enjoying it so much. However, the reality was quite the opposite. The job turned out to be incredibly enjoyable.
“Do you think I’d excel as a spy? Honestly, I believe so. It’s not too late, I hope. While I’m unsure about the exams, I’m confident in my abilities in the field. You see, when I was just four years old, I made up my mind to be an actor, and that’s what I pursued. However, around age 11, I had a moment of doubt and considered becoming a spy instead. Acting and spying share a common element – performance.”
