“I would like you to die”: To Land a Role in Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Franchise, Elden Ring Voice Actor Gave His Best Death Cries For a Painfully Long Time

Similar to other games from FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki, Elden Ring features memorable boss battles, intense combat, and countless death screens. However, what some players might not realize is the immense work that goes into making those deaths feel authentic. For instance, Praetor Rykard’s voice, which you hear in Elden Ring, is brought to life by Simon Gregor during a rigorous recording process.

During an interview, Gregor disclosed that while recording his part, the developers inquired if he could create some sounds for character deaths. He mentioned it took around half an hour and was a challenging task. The eerie sounds of death perfectly complemented the game’s atmosphere, and he delivered impressive results.

Hidetaka Miyazaki and FromSoft really went above and beyond

On the Dan Allen YouTube channel, Simon Gregor explained that FromSoftware’s approach to directing is quite considerate. Unlike some developers who might demand changes outright, FromSoftware instead trusted the director to understand their requirements. However, he noted that things got tough during sessions when they asked him to record multiple death screams.

“During their performance, they requested responses such as ‘While you’re here, might I ask for a few battle cries? I need you to act out some death scenes for us. Could you show me how a soldier might react when stabbed in the gut? And what sound would be made if a sword went through your head?'”

In the case of a voice actor for Elden Ring, it’s no surprise that they’re familiar with the challenges that come along with such a role. After all, FromSoftware games are infamous for their high level of difficulty. It’s not just about us players dying often, but also about defeating numerous enemies throughout these games.

Gregor admitted as much during the interview, emphasizing that the immense cast of characters in the game warranted his hard work. In other words, he said something like, “There are a lot of people making noise, ohh and ahh.” Although it might seem routine for a voice actor, he stated that this aspect was what “drained me the most.

Elden Ring has some excellent voices and iconic lines

Expressing Rykard’s dialogue is more than simply depicting agony; he is one of Elden Ring’s most fearsome bosses, recognized as the Lord of Blasphemy. Originally a noble ruler of Volcano Manor, Rykard’s descent into madness led him to voluntarily merge with a monstrous serpent in his relentless pursuit of power.

Rykard’s boss battle in Elden Ring stands out as particularly unforgettable, not only due to its disturbing visuals but also because of his spine-tingling voice lines. One line that will forever be etched in our memory is, “Join the Serpent King, as kin… Together, we shall consume the very gods!” Delivered with a chilling, hypnotic conviction by Gregor, this phrase sends shivers down one’s spine.

The phenomenal success of Elden Ring has underscored the significance of acts like Gregor’s. Since its debut in 2022, this game from FromSoftware has sold more than 28 million copies, making it their most triumphant title thus far. With the arrival of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC in mid-2024, Elden Ring once again drew us all into the realm of shadows for an even tougher test.

As a die-hard fan, I can attest that Gregor’s grueling sessions in the recording booth were undeniably worth it. His breathtaking portrayal of Rykard has significantly enriched the game, even though many players might not consider Rykard their favorite boss. However, one unforgettable line from him will forever linger in our memories.
