‘I would literally kill for my sister’

‘I would literally kill for my sister’

As a fellow sibling with two close sisters and younger brothers, I can certainly relate to the dynamics of the Garvey sisters in Bad Sisters. My sister and I were more like partners in crime, always stealing each other’s clothes and engaging in playful squabbles. However, we were also caretakers for our younger brothers, which created a unique dynamic.

As one of four siblings, do you relate to the relationships the Garvey sisters have?

Completely, my sister and I have a two-year age gap, making us incredibly close. We often borrow each other’s clothes, engage in playful squabbles, but our bond runs deep. We’d stand by each other through thick and thin – I’d go as far as saying I’d protect her life. However, my younger brothers are eight and ten years junior to us. Consequently, we don’t crowd each other too much. Instead, my sister and I tended to their needs when they were infants, serving as mini caregivers for them. This created a unique dynamic in our family.

I read that you formed a band with your siblings over lockdown. How did that work out?

Even though I didn’t start a band myself, I discovered that my siblings had been composing songs together, giving the impression of having formed a band. However, I was left out of the loop. Subsequently, I attempted to join in their creative process, but they responded by asking me to depart from the group.

Why? Are you tone deaf?

No! I had too many great ideas, and they were jealous of how good I was!

Are you now close to your on-screen sisters?

Indeed! We’re almost as close as can be, constantly connected through various WhatsApp groups at all hours. To be precise, we interact in three separate WhatsApp groups daily. It was delightful to reconnect last week in London during the publicity tour. In the coming days, we’ve got three exciting ones planned in New York – expect plenty of dinners and spa outings!

So, where do we find Becka at the start of the new series?

Over the past two years, she’s grown significantly. Life experiences have broadened her perspective, and she’s found a good balance. She’s in a new relationship now, which seems to be bringing out a more mature side of her – or at least she’s trying to embrace maturity.

What are her best and worst traits?

Her best are hard to choose, because I quite like a lot of her. I like that she’s like a million different emotions in one second. Her most annoying trait? Chewing loudly.

Are all the Garvey sisters remarkably intricate? I’m curious, what makes Sharon’s writing particularly unique or exceptional in your opinion?

I suppose the authenticity it exudes. It seems like we’re peeking into genuine lives, and the blend of drama and comedy is masterfully executed, particularly by Sharon who has a distinctive style. Perhaps that’s why the show resonates so much: it feels like observing real people. Quite often, when a friend encounters a difficulty in their life, it evokes a sense of “Bad Sisters”-like scenario, as if we’re witnessing a scene straight from the series itself.

In simpler terms, Sharon has the ability to transform a distressed woman into a heroine, while maintaining a charismatic and humorous demeanor. This is how I perceive my friends as they navigate their lives. Essentially, Sharon encapsulates the raw truth of women’s experiences.

Did you appreciate filming back in Ireland?

I found it wonderful. Filming in Ireland feels like being back home, but it’s consistently chilly and wet, as we encountered four hurricanes. The primary difficulty when working in Ireland lies in its abysmal weather conditions.
