Ice Age Star Teases New Sequel on the Way

As a lifelong fan of the Ice Age series, I can hardly contain my excitement over the news that they’re about to release Ice Age 6! I remember growing up with those lovable characters and their hilarious antics, and it feels like revisiting old friends.

20th Century Studios is rumored to be working on a new “Ice Age” movie, marking the latest installment in the series since 2022 and apparently the first full-fledged sequel since before Disney bought 20th Century Fox and closed Blue Sky Studios. In a recent episode of NPR’s “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me,” actor John Leguizamo, who plays Sid the Sloth, hinted that they are about to produce “Ice Age 6.” During the show, Leguizamo demonstrated his voice for the hosts and discussed the challenge of convincing young children about the roles of voice actors.

The initial “Ice Age” movie was released by Blue Sky and Fox in 2006, sparking a series of five additional films, seven short movies, two holiday specials, and a TV show called “Scrat Tales” until 2022. However, speculations about the franchise’s future have arisen since Blue Sky Studios closed shop, leaving its continuation uncertain.

“We’re about to do Ice Age 6, I think,” Leguizamo said during the interview.

According to Leguizamo, his children found it strange seeing their father transformed as he was in the Ice Age series, with the appearance and voice. He mentioned that they were too young at the time to fully appreciate it. Furthermore, he often has parents trying to introduce him as Sid the Sloth in public, but he clarifies that it doesn’t quite fit.

As a devoted Ice Age fan, I recently dove into the latest spinoff titled “2022’s The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild” which was a bit different from its predecessors, as it didn’t have most of the familiar faces from the franchise. Both this new adventure and the earlier “Scrat Tales” premiered on Disney+, with the latter marking the first full-length Ice Age film to bypass the big screen. It managed decent viewership on Disney+, making it to the top ten in its initial two weeks, but unfortunately, it wasn’t a critical hit, and despite its substantial budget, it didn’t reach the #1 spot. With no clear sign of success, it seems that this film didn’t quite strike the right chord. However, there were whispers of another Ice Age movie in the pipeline, penned by Ray DeLaurentis from The Fairly OddParents. As of now, Disney has remained tight-lipped about any further developments.

Apart from Leguizamo, the Ice Age series regularly includes Ray Romano, known for his role in Fly Me to the Moon, and Denis Leary, famous for his work on Rescue Me.
