Ice Truck Killer’s Secret Origin Unveiled in Dexter: Original Sin

Ahead lies a revelation about Brian Moser, also known as the Ice Truck Killer, in episode 9 of Dexter: Original Sin. This spin-off series has unveiled a heartbreaking backstory that explains his role. In contrast to the original Dexter series, which left few secrets unexplored over its eight seasons, there were still some mysteries regarding Dexter’s early life that remained. Specifically, there was a 15-year gap between his first murder and our initial encounter with him in the pilot episode. This new information helps fill in those missing years.

In the series “Dexter: New Blood”, it was revealed that Dexter’s character seemingly perished, leading Showtime to explore ways to continue the franchise. As a result, they developed a prequel series called “Dexter: Original Sin“. Although Dexter: Original Sin doesn’t offer major revelations about Dexter himself, it provides plenty of references (or “easter eggs”) and sheds light on the origins behind his disguise. For instance, we learn why he discards bodies in the ocean, how he discovered M99, why he uses so much plastic, and many other details. However, most significant disclosures center around other characters in the story.

Dexter: Original Sin Reveals the Ice Truck Killer’s Origin Story

In episode 9 of the series “Dexter: Original Sin,” titled “Blood Drive,” we delve deeper into the character of Brian Moser. It became clear in the previous episode that Brian Moser is the NHI Killer, a ruthless serial killer who utilizes diverse methods to eliminate his victims. As Dexter’s estranged biological brother and eventual antagonist, Harry eventually identified him as the killer during an investigation. This revelation was quite unexpected given the limited information available about Brian Moser prior to his introduction in “Dexter” season one. Besides their shared traumatic past where their mother was brutally murdered in a shipping container, not much was known about Brian Moser until this point, making him something of an enigma.

Instead, it’s uncovered in Dexter: Original Sin that the separation didn’t occur inside the shipping container. Rather, Brian was briefly under the care of Harry and Doris Morgan. Stricken with guilt over Laura Moser’s demise, Harry endeavors to persuade his spouse to take in Dexter and Brian. One fateful day, with Harry away at work, Brian attempts to silence a crying newborn Deb using a pillow, causing her distress. Horrified, Doris urges Harry to address Brian’s actions, which ultimately leads to an outburst of violence from Brian that unsettles the household.

Eventually, Harry comes to terms with an inner darkness he cannot manage, leading to his placement in foster care and a separation from Dexter. This turn of events is sad for Brian, who longs to be with his family, especially Dexter. Fortunately, Dexter was too young and traumatized at the time, eventually forgetting about his mother’s fate and their brotherly bond. Unbeknownst to Dexter, he had a brother named Harry. Brian, however, never forgot and has been driven by an unwavering desire to reconnect with Dexter.

After Brian started murdering his victims, he subsequently began tailing Dexter and observing him as he explored different crime scenes that Brian himself was connected to. In fact, it was Brian Moser who appeared in the restaurant during the second episode of “Dexter: Original Sin”. This confirms a fan theory, even though some viewers found it hard to believe before they had access to all the details. Nevertheless, it appears as though “Dexter: Original Sin” has been hinting at the Ice Truck Killer throughout the season by incorporating several Easter eggs.

From my perspective, it’s still uncertain what role Brian will play in “Dexter: Original Sin.” Given that Harry is grappling with a hidden darkness amidst an extensive investigation, a significant confrontation appears imminent in the season finale approaching next week. Although Brian isn’t the primary antagonist in “Dexter: Original Sin,” he undeniably forms a crucial part of the puzzle. It’s unclear if Harry ever crossed paths with Brian following their childhood, but this series suggests that Harry was far more complex than viewers might have previously thought.
