Iconic DC Duo: The Question and Batwoman Reunite!

The DC All-In publishing project has brought back numerous cherished aspects of the DC Multiverse for readers, and this new phase has offered fans a significant treat – the resurrection of Renee Montoya as The Question. In her current role, The Question is tasked with safeguarding the Justice League Watchtower, a duty that has kept her busy in “The Question: All Along the Watchtower”.

A formidable adversary emerges in this series, none other than the Cyborg Superman, who has managed to break free from the Phantom Zone and sets his sights on the Watchtower. His intention is to end his own life, a pursuit he’s been relentlessly pursuing, which also puts Superman and his allies in danger. The Cyborg Superman was initially beyond The Question’s capabilities, but when he demonstrated his power to manipulate minds, the situation escalated dramatically.

In “The Question: All Along the Watchtower” #5, penned by Alex Segura, Cian Tormey, and Raul Fernandez, The Question finds herself engaged in a fierce battle against her teammates, among whom is Batwoman, a woman she holds dear affection for.

The highly anticipated reunion between The Question and Batwoman occurs after many years apart. They were initially reunited in the comic series titled “52“, where Renee Montoya first adopted the role of The Question, and a new iteration of Kate Kane was introduced. Their bond played a significant role in enhancing LGBTQ+ representation within the comics, and this reunion has been eagerly awaited by many for quite some time.

The Question Is Able to Use Love to Save the Day

The predicament starts when the Question confronts a challenging situation – the mind-controlled Animal Man, Blue Beetles, Nightshade, and Batwoman, a team assigned to her as the sheriff of the Watchtower. However, the Question overpowers each one, understanding that the more individuals Cyborg Superman manipulates, the poorer his control over them individually. Yet, there’s someone she wishes to avoid – Batwoman. The Question recognizes Batwoman more than anyone else, as Batwoman understands her in return. Fleeing, the Question uses a tracker provided by Jaime Reyes to locate a means of returning Cyborg Superman to the Phantom Zone. Catching up with her, Batwoman has the upper hand, and the Question devises a plan. Since force is what has enabled Cyborg Superman’s control, she decides to opt for an alternative approach with Batwoman instead.

In a past life, Renee Montoya and Kate Kane shared a deep romantic connection, even before they were associated with superhero antics. Their relationship was cut short when Renee felt that Kate lacked purpose in life. They reconnected during their investigation of the Crime Bible in the comic series 52, following the death of Vic Sage. As events unfolded, Kate transformed into Batwoman while Renee took on the role of the new Question. Their partnership was strong until they parted ways. More recently, Renee learned that Batwoman would be on the Watchtower, causing her feelings for Kate to resurface strongly due to their history. In a bid to free Batwoman from Cyborg Superman’s control without resorting to violence, she chose love and kissed Batwoman, expressing feelings she had harbored for years.

The Question and Batwoman Prove That They’re Still an Amazing Team

For the first time, readers witnessed a collaboration between Question and Batwoman, taking down Intergang – a task often requiring Superman’s capabilities. When working in harmony, this duo is extraordinary. A simple kiss from the Question can break Batwoman free from her mind control. They swiftly resume their familiar partnership, joining forces to halt the self-destruct sequence, with the reappearance of the original Question as an aid. Despite saving the Watchtower, the Cyborg Superman remains undefeated, setting the stage for the following issue’s climax.

For a considerable period, fans of DC comics have eagerly anticipated the reunion of the Question and Batwoman. Both characters seemed poised for significant developments under the New 52, but sadly, that era concluded without Renee Montoya continuing as the Question, Batwoman’s comic series was canceled, and her romantic relationship with Maggie Sawyer was abruptly terminated before they could tie the knot – a disappointing turn of events that diminished DC’s representation of LGBTQ+ characters. The reunion of these two characters represents progress, and it is hoped that this time around, DC provides them with the happy ending they truly deserve.
