Iconic PlayStation Franchise Could Get a Remaster (But New Games Are Unlikely)

The Killzone series by PlayStation and Guerrilla Games, which often outshone the Halo series among first-person shooter enthusiasts, consisted of a main trilogy, plus some spinoffs for systems like PSP and PS Vita. Yet, after the 2013 release of “Killzone: Shadow Fall” for PlayStation 4, the game failed to meet expectations. This, coupled with Guerrilla Games’ concentration on the Horizon series, sparked speculation that Killzone might be finished. However, hints from the game’s composer imply that the series may not have met its end entirely.

Despite a decade passing since the last installment, enthusiasts of the Killzone series continue to harbor optimism for its future. The online servers for Killzone: Shadow Fall closed in 2022, but gamers can still enjoy the single-player offline versions of the game. For added convenience, they can revisit earlier Killzone games through streaming with PlayStation Plus. However, this option doesn’t fully satisfy many fans who are eager for a remaster to make the original Killzone games more easily playable. Notably, Killzone composer Joris de Man recently expressed his desire for such a project.

I know this has been said before but I would love to play a rebooted Killzone game

The Killzone community continues to buzz with activity, as fans discuss playing the games again or discovering them for the first time. Frequently, posts similar to the one you see appear, where fans express their wishes for a potential reboot. Despite rumors of its abandonment, recent comments from the game’s composer hint that the idea of Killzone remasters might not be as far-fetched as we thought.

Guerrilla Games Could Remaster Killzone… Some Day

As a passionate gamer, I’ve been yearning to share my thoughts about Killzone. Recently, Joris de Man, who’s worked on the music and sound design for the series, expressed in an interview with VideoGamer that he thinks a remaster of the game would thrive. However, he’s uncertain if it will ever come to fruition, but he sure hopes so. It’s important to note that although Joris has been part of Guerrilla’s team in the past, he’s not currently employed there, so his comments should be taken as personal views rather than official announcements from the studio.

Speaking of recent developments, Guerrilla Games has unveiled an enhanced edition of “Horizon Zero Dawn,” one of their successful series. Not long ago, the “LEGO Horizon Adventures” spinoff was also launched. Given these events, it’s high time for Guerrilla Games to announce its upcoming main project. Although the studio previously hinted at needing a change and expressing feelings of being “done with” the series in October 2024, they didn’t rule out returning to the “Killzone” intellectual property altogether. Instead, it’s plausible that the studio will be prepared to revisit the “Killzone” series after focusing on other projects, which would provide them with a new vision for what a remaster could entail.

Regarding fresh installments in the series, de Man isn’t hopeful that the studio will attempt it due to potential changes in what gamers want from games over the past decade. However, first-person shooter games remain popular among players, and there seems to be a desire for more Killzone content, even if it’s just a remaster. It appears that some people involved with the project might consider revisiting it, but whether Guerrilla Games as a developer is on board remains uncertain.
