Last Friday, Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas offered Carrie Fisher’s complete Star Wars costume from the film for sale. This ensemble included a bikini top, bikini bottoms with plates, hip rings, an armlet, and bracelets. Such cinematic memorabilia was among the numerous historic items available.
As a movie enthusiast, I was thrilled to witness an astounding sale during the event. The most impressive purchase of the day was connected to Star Wars. A miniature Y-Wing Starfighter aircraft from the original film fetched an astonishing price of $1.55 million (approximately £1.2m).
During the sale, some other significant items were also bid on fiercely. For instance, there was an authentic Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home poster, fetching $106,250, a Thor hammer from Thor: The Dark World that sold for $81,250, Harry Potter’s wand from The Prisoner of Azkaban, which went for $52,000, Macaulay Culkin’s outfit from Home Alone that cost $47,500, and a Mandalorian helmet that was purchased for $40,000.
Leia’s costume has previously fetched a large sum at auction; it went for $96,000 (approximately £63,000) in 2015. This price nearly doubled within just under a decade.
After being enslaved by Jabba the Hutt in “Return of the Jedi” (1983), Leia’s distinctive costume grabbed the audience’s attention. This outfit later became iconic due to its portrayal in the film, with Fisher herself openly discussing its significance.
In an interview with NPR in 2016, just before her passing, she shared that when George Lucas first showed her the costume, she believed him to be making a joke.
She expressed her discomfort, “I wasn’t dressed in something I would voluntarily choose. When Lucas presented me with that outfit, I initially took it as a joke and felt uneasy.”
