As a seasoned critic with a background in both professional dancing and judging, I must say that “Strictly Come Dancing” is not just a show to watch – it’s a spectacle to behold. The professionals pour their heart and soul into every performance, while the judges juggle the delicate task of constructive criticism amidst the public’s expectations.
Add Strictly Come Dancing to your watchlist
Originally, you began your television journey as a professional on the German equivalent of ‘Strictly’. Is it more challenging to judge or to perform as a pro in this context?
Each role presents unique challenges. Professionals pour all their effort into their work, acting as mentors, caregivers, and artists to the contestants. In their judging capacity, they face tough decisions constantly; pleasing everyone is impossible.
Is there a difference between judging celebrities and professional dancers?
On the professional front, frankness is key. I’m not one to be bluntly harsh, but it’s important to acknowledge that effort and hard work are essential if you want to achieve results. In a casual setting, perhaps on a TV show, this might come off as too direct or even shocking. No one wants someone else to feel embarrassed or belittled. However, there are certain individuals with whom you can share laughter. Take Paul Merson for instance; he gave his best and was open to humor. Such individuals make the journey less monotonous.
As a young ballroom dancer, did you find the training techniques difficult?
One of my educators often left me feeling utterly insignificant. I was left exposed and defenseless. Modern teaching methods have evolved greatly, and we approach children’s motivation in unique ways today. Regrettably, many of my self-doubts stem from my early years. With the passage of time, a significant portion has slipped away from my memory – it’s my mind’s mechanism to shield me. I’ve consciously suppressed numerous events.
Do you ever give advice to contestants who might be finding it tough?
To minimize my interactions with them, as it could make me feel remorseful. At the German version of “Strictly”, where I’m also a judge, we used to host a weekly after-party, and conversations would naturally ensue. However, if you need to decline their invitations in front of millions, it can be quite challenging!
Is it easier now that your sister Oti isn’t on the show?
Oti and I needed to put a pause in our chat at times due to professionalism. Now, we critically analyze everything during our weekly meeting on Sundays. It’s refreshing to discuss with someone reliable who offers valuable insights. Similarly, when I watch her dance on “Dancing on Ice,” I gain great feedback.
Do you have any favourite contestants?
My advantage lies in the fact that I reside in a different country. If someone who’s been a long-time fan of EastEnders encounters an actor on Strictly Come Dancing, they might have preconceived feelings towards them. However, since I’m not familiar with them, I can approach them with a fresh perspective.
If you could choose a celebrity for the Christmas special, who would it be?
It seems like a great idea to invite Tom Hiddleston, as I’ve heard Andrew Garfield express interest in the same. Plus, let’s not forget about Mel B too!
