2025 is still fresh, but it looks like Godzilla, the King of Monsters, is poised for a fantastic year ahead! Not only will other publishing houses create tales involving Godzilla, but IDW Publishing, who have been managing the Godzilla comics license for over 10 years, are set to take Toho’s kaiju and their companions (both friends and foes) on thrilling and original journeys. In February itself, IDW will release the mini-series Godzilla: Heist, as well as launch its new anthology Godzilla vs America. March promises yet another exciting series for fans to look forward to with Mothra: Queen of the Monsters. These are merely the start of what IDW has in store for 2025.
Jake Williams, the editor of Godzilla stories, shared with ComicBook during an exclusive interview that he aims to create tales never told before, ones unique to our universe. When scouting ideas for the new cosmos, he was particular about the paths he wished to tread. Essentially, he’s on a quest for excitement. He seeks that immediate, instinctive response when reading the perfect pitch—one that makes him eager to share the news with his colleagues right away. If a proposal doesn’t evoke such a reaction, it’s not worth pursuing.
As a movie enthusiast, let me tell you that one pitch that was a no-brainer to give the go-ahead was Godzilla: Heist. This series, penned by Van Jensen (The Flash) and illustrated by Kelsey Ramsay (Doctor Who: The Fifteenth Doctor), centers around a character who, in an unexpected twist, joyfully summons Godzilla to create the perfect diversion for a bold heist. However, with such advanced technology at his disposal, being caught red-handed with stolen goods might just be the tip of the iceberg.
Williams remarked that “Godzilla: Heist” was one of those proposals that needed no second thought. In a meeting discussing ideas, he presented it as Van Jensen’s idea and, upon explaining the concept, concluded with ‘I mean, come on.’ It didn’t require much more persuasion after that.
A week after the debut of “Godzilla: Heist #1”, IDW will unveil the first installment of the “Godzilla vs America” series, starting with “Godzilla vs Chicago”. This is the initial issue out of a planned five, all slated for release in 2025. The “vs Chicago” issue will showcase stories penned by Tim Seeley, Mike Costa, Ryan Browne, Caroline Cash, and Ezra Claytan Daniels. For editors Williams and Nic Nino, the aim of “Godzilla vs America” is to present uncharted territories in America that Godzilla hasn’t previously explored. To make the selection process more specific, they also set a rule to choose comic creators who are either from or reside in these cities.
I didn’t find a centralized online directory for comic book professionals’ addresses, so I had to do extensive research using search engines like Google. This process also helped me exclude smaller cities with fewer than eight professional comic book creators.
For those who eagerly anticipate a sequel, take heart as there might be further installments of “Godzilla vs America“, if the book proves successful. Williams stated, “If it resonates with audiences, we’ll definitely produce more! Frankly, that’s our general approach for all our work. I enjoy serial stories and long-running series. So, show your support by buying the books, and we’ll keep creating!
As a film enthusiast, I’ve always been thrilled by the towering presence of Godzilla in IDW’s kaiju tales, with his name gracing every title. However, starting March, the spotlight shifts as we delve into a new series titled “Mothra: Queen of the Monsters“, penned by Sophie Campbell and Matt Frank. It’s an exciting change, as Mothra becomes the first kaiju other than Godzilla to headline her own comic book, a decision that stemmed from Campbell and Frank’s captivating pitch for this enchanting character.
Williams stated, “Should we focus on an angle involving a specific monster, I’d be open to showcasing other creatures of the kaiju world. However, I believe Mothra was the most suitable choice for numerous reasons. From a business standpoint, she is adored by fans. In terms of narrative, her unique mythology and moral character make her an intriguing monster to delve into. Unlike stories about other kaiju that could resemble traditional Godzilla narratives with a different monster wreaking havoc in the city, Mothra’s tales organically veer off in a distinct direction.
2025 will see Godzilla enthusiasts continuing to indulge in their passion, and IDW is gearing up for a grand revelation on Free Comic Book Day this year. On May 3rd, readers can grab a free comic titled “Godzilla: The New Heroes Free Comic Book Day 2025“. This comic promises to introduce fresh kaiju and characters, while marking the beginning of a whole new Godzilla universe for the series. According to Williams, this new universe implies that fans can anticipate a new ongoing series as well as comics interconnected within the same timeline.
Williams explained that they’ve developed a fresh realm for discovery, and by employing multiple series, they plan to present every perspective of it. This approach will enable them to tell distinct tales across various genres, each capable of standing alone yet contributing to the larger storyline. However, he wanted to clarify any doubts – just as Marvel or DC maintain a main continuity alongside off-the-wall stories like Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre, we won’t cease producing such unconventional books in our collection.
Fans of Godzilla will recognize that both Marvel and DC have incorporated the King of the Monsters into their comic book series, but unlike them, IDW Publishing is venturing into territory that these two companies can’t explore.
Although these comics will likely be entertaining, we’re creating a world where Godzilla can reside permanently,” Williams explained. “It’s a realm tailored exclusively for the Mighty Monarch, providing us with a rich setting to spin tales within for many years.
In simpler terms, audiences should anticipate an unsettling reveal when the latest Godzilla from this series is unveiled, since Williams has clarified that the Godzilla depicted on the cover of the Free Comic Book Day issue (which can be seen above) does not belong to this new universe.
Williams stated that the covers needed to be prepared exceptionally early for Free Comic Book Day (FCBD), and since our new design wasn’t quite ready for unveiling yet, Oliver Ono was tasked with creating a stunning cover depicting his version of a classic Godzilla. Regarding the new design, he hinted that Nikola Čižmešija (with some help from Pablo Tunica) came up with an incredibly terrifying take on Godzilla. This design represents a significant departure for IDW’s Godzilla, and we believe it will create a distinctive niche for us within the Godzilla universe.
