‘If That Goes South, You’re F—ed. ‘ It’s Always Sunny Stars Share Stories About Learning Rob McElhenney And Kaitlin Olson Were Dating

The long-running, consistently amusing sitcom “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” has made quite an impression throughout its extensive run on television. This year alone, it will air Season 17, as scheduled for 2025. As the show has been around for quite some time, there are several actors who may have slipped your memory. Moreover, the series is filled with humorous side characters and a plethora of outrageous acts by the main gang. However, an aspect that might not be frequently mentioned is how the show brought together its leading stars Kaitlin Olson and Rob McElhenney. Now, their fellow cast members are recounting amusing tales about discovering they were dating.

Always Sunny Star Glenn Howerton Thought The ‘Whole Show Is Fucked’ When He Heard Kaitlin Olson And Rob McElhenney Were Dating

Given that Kaitlin Olson and Rob McElhenney, who play Sweet Dee and Mac on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, have been married since 2008 and have two teenage sons (one of whom they let watch their show about the often-depraved Paddy’s Pub gang), it’s probable that their many fans are aware that the series is where they first met and fell for each other. Although the tale is quite endearing, as co-star/executive producer Glenn Howerton (who portrays the potentially dangerous Dennis) told Variety, he was taken aback when he discovered this fact, and remarked:

he went out with some girl, but I now suspect he was just fabricating stories to explain his absences.

Indeed, it didn’t make things easier when McElhenney frequently deceived about his location (which the cunning Paddy’s gang might find amusing), as his circumstances are understandable. Given that he and the star of A.P. Bio shared a roof, and endured lean times to bring the show to life, learning that their efforts could be compromised due to McElhenney dating a colleague is a hard pill to swallow. This is especially true since any issues in their relationship could lead to problems at work, potentially undoing all the progress they’ve made and jeopardizing their accomplishments. Howerton further elaborated:

I assumed his behavior hinted at something, as dating a co-star could potentially disrupt the show and put everyone’s job at risk. If things go wrong, it could lead to a disastrous situation for you and the entire production. Essentially, you’d be putting everyone in a tough spot. When I laughed, he clarified that he was being serious. We both had tried to prevent it, but it seemed destined to happen. They say love is blind, and apparently, it has clouded our judgment.

As a devoted fan, I’ve always been intrigued by the dynamic between Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Despite trying to suppress their off-screen feelings, it wasn’t until Charlie Day tied the knot with Mary Elizabeth Ellis, who played his on-screen partner on The Waitress, that they could no longer deny their emotions. While I was privy to this confession, which thankfully steered clear of explicit details, McElhenney was actually doing his part as a responsible housemate, taking care of the litter boxes for our two cats at the time. He even shared:

As I’m navigating through the crowded concert, a cat pooper-scooper in my grasp, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “Goodness gracious! Are you serious? This has to be the most absurd thing I’ve ever seen!

Ponder this: What if things hadn’t gone as planned? The unthinkable might be that “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” wouldn’t still be the longest-running scripted comedy on TV. We might have missed out on some of the greatest episodes. Perhaps the show would have evolved without Danny Dee, and Kaitlin Olson wouldn’t have pushed her comedic boundaries quite as much. Can you envision a world where people no longer shout “Shut up, bird!” at her in public? Quite a different universe, isn’t it?

Danny DeVito And Charlie Day Were Far More Chill About Kaitlin Olson And Rob McElhenney Dating

Despite many finding it easy to comprehend why Howerton might have strong criticisms towards his friend following the romance revelation in the crossover between Sunny and Abbott Elementary, it’s worth noting that not everyone shared this sentiment. Contrarily, Danny DeVito (who plays Frank, Dennis and Dee’s father) not only anticipated this union but appeared to hold very favorable opinions about the couple. As he expressed:

During our journey, there was an evident, subtle attraction between them, a charming pull if you will. It seems that sometimes, those destined to be together find themselves in the same place.

Oh, isn’t that sweet! I must say, Day didn’t have any inkling of suspicion regarding the couple. Yet, he felt completely at ease with their union.

I had no inkling of it. It took me completely by surprise. On the other hand, I didn’t have strong feelings about it one way or another. Perhaps because Mary Elizabeth and I were so deeply entwined at that stage in our relationship, I thought to myself, ‘What’s all the fuss?’ It seems Glenn was slightly taken aback.

Conversely:

I had no idea it was going to happen. It caught me off guard completely. As for not showing much emotion, I didn’t particularly care one way or another about it. Since Mary Elizabeth and I were so intertwined by that time, I thought, ‘So what’s the problem?’ Glenn seemed a bit surprised though.

It’s quite clear that Howerton was significantly rattled, not just a bit off balance; however, it’s water under the bridge now. Fortunately, things have worked out splendidly, and there’s a strong possibility that this long-running comedy could entertain us for many seasons to come!
